National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.

Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.

Most areas celebrate National Night Out on the first Tuesday in August; however, many cities/states celebrate it the first Tuesday in October due to the heat. Knoxville is one of those cities.
3.  8th Annual Wiffleball Tournament Rained Out

Much to staff and players' disappointment, the 8th Annual Wiffleball Tournament was cancelled due to rain shortly after it got started this past Saturday. However, those who attended had fun in the midst of the storm. We will have to wait until next year to see if Westwood can hold on to their title.
4.  Knoxville-Knox County Planning Commission Meets Early This Month

Due to fall break, the Knoxville-Knox County Planning Commission will meet earlier than usual this month. The meeting is set for Thursday, Oct. 2, at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building, 400 Main St.

Please call 865-215-2500 or email con...@knoxplanning.org with any questions or visit Knoxville-Knox County Planning’s website.
5.  More on the Local Option Sales Tax Referendum

Last week, the Local Option Sales Tax referendum, which will appear on the November 4th Ballot, was introduced. This week let’s take a closer look at what it means for Knoxville residents.

Mayor Kincannon, with the City Council’s approval, proposed exempting groceries from the sales tax increase. If the Local Option Sales Tax passes, the sales tax on groceries will remain unchanged. This was an intentional move to reduce the financial impact on everyone’s everyday needs.

Another key aspect: visitors to the City of Knoxville will contribute significantly to the revenue generated. Unlike property taxes, which fall primarily on homeowners and renters, a sales tax allows tourists and non-city residents to help fund local improvements throughout neighborhoods.

It’s also worth noting that neighboring counties — Blount, Anderson, Grainger, Jefferson, and Sevier — already have a 2.75% local option sales tax. When you shop at Tanger Outlets or enjoy a weekend in Sevier County, you are already paying that rate.

To learn more and explore the projects this revenue would support, visit www.knoxvilletn.gov/localoption.
6. Resources for Non-Profits in Knoxville: Filing Guides and Support

Non-profit organizers in Knoxville have access to several essential tools to help navigate filing requirements. Two helpful resources include:

Additionally, the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE) is currently updating its filing guidelines for non-profit organizations. Once finalized, this document will outline required forms, where to access them, and applicable filing fees specific to Knox County. The updated guide will be available for free on the ONE’s website, alongside other resources designed to support local neighborhoods and organizations.
7.  Knox Pride Fest is This Weekend

Mark your calendars! Knox Pride Fest is happening this Saturday, Oct. 4, from 12-6 p.m. at World’s Fair Park, 963 World's Fair Park Dr.

This event is more than just a party - it’s a chance to come together, uplift one another, and strengthen our community. Your presence matters. When people show up as their authentic selves, a space is created where everyone feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

Join your community for a day of connection, love, and pride.

For more information, visit Knox Pride’s website.
