It’s that time of the year again!

Neighborhood groups wishing to apply for the Neighborhood Small Grants Program (NSGP) for the 2024 grant cycle must send a representative to one of the three scheduled pre-application workshops.

NEW for this grant cycle: The person who attends the workshop must be the primary contact for the project.

You must register to attend one of these workshops by contacting Hayley Howard at 865-215-2113 or hho...@knoxvilletn.gov. Also contact Hayley if a neighborhood representative absolutely cannot attend any of these three workshops.

Learn more about the NSGP on the City’s website.

5.  2023 Recreation Challenge Grants Are Now Open

Does your neighborhood group have a great idea to add functionality or amenities to a City park or greenway? The Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Recreation Challenge Grant Program is open for applications

In past years, groups have used grant funding for playground equipment, water fountains, benches, landscaping, and other projects that enhance public property and benefit the general public. Grant funds can also be used to promote activities in City parks or greenways, and can even be used to match funds for various activities, like yoga.

This program is open to community groups with a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), or 501(c)(6) status. Grant recipients will be reimbursed 50 percent of the cost of a single project, up to $3,000 -- an increase from $2,500.

Applications are due no later than Friday, June 30, 2023, at 4:30 p.m.

If you are interested in applying for the Recreation Challenge Grant, or have questions about the process, contact Tim Hester at the...@knoxvilletn.gov

Visit the city’s website for additional information.

6.  East Knoxville Community Open House

The City of Knoxville will host an East Knoxville Community Open House on Tuesday, April 11, 5-7 p.m. at the Jacob Building, 401 Lakeside Dr.

The event’s format is the same as open houses held in February in North and South Knoxville. Residents are welcome to attend any time during the event. City staff and partners will be present to provide information and answer questions about many projects located in East Knoxville including:
  • Magnolia Avenue streetscapes project

7.  Summer Opportunity Youth Grant Deadline This Week

The deadline for local nonprofits to apply for grant funding from the City’s Summer Opportunity Youth Grant program is this Thursday, April 6, at 4:30 p.m.

The City’s Summer Opportunity Youth Grant program offers grant funding to local nonprofits to provide summer jobs and opportunities for young people who are most at risk for violence.

Community organizations can apply for funding amounts between $3,000 and $20,000 to expand their summer programs to include opportunity youth – those who are at-risk, or proven risk, for violence because they are currently or were previously engaged with the juvenile or criminal justice system, have a close friend or family member who has recently been involved in a violent crime, or may have themselves been a violent crime victim.

Grant funding requests should specifically support programming, stipends, payment, or other services directly for the youth engaged in programming.

Applications and additional information, including guidelines, a budget template and contacts for assistance can be found on the Office of Community Safety’s website.

8.  City Brush Collection Is Back

Did you notice the switch? Public Service began picking up brush in early March.

Neighbors can expect crews to college brush – piles including sticks, limbs and leaves – every two weeks through October.

Brush waste should be placed next to the street in an unobstructed area and kept separate from trash. Brush piles should be no larger than a single 6' x 6' x 6' pile.

Crews collect week-of rather than on a particular day, so remember to get your brush pile together out by 7 a.m. on Monday the week of your brush collection.

To find the schedule for your street, look at the Brush Pickup Schedule. You will type in your street name and it will tell you which week you are on, Week 1 or Week 2.  Then look on the monthly schedule.  Week 1 is in light green; Week 2 is in dark green.

Placement of your brush piles is critical.  For more information about what to put out and how to put it out, visit the City’s website.

9.  Summer in the City Internship Application Open Through April 23

The City of Knoxville is offering 20 paid internship positions to young people, ages 16-22, as a part of the Summer in the City Internship program.

As a part of this program, young people will have the opportunity to work in City departments, engage in personal and professional development opportunities, community service, and complete a group project.

Applications are open now, and will stay open until April 23. To apply, visit our website!

10.  SKNBC Sponsors Conversation on Knoxville’s Tree Cover

South Knoxville Neighborhood & Business Coalition (SKNBC) is sponsoring a meeting for all South Knoxville neighbors to learn about the Knoxville Urban Forest Master Plan process and give input on the future of the tree cover (or canopy) in Knoxville. The meeting will be on Monday, April 10, at 6 p.m. at the Ijams Nature Center Community Room, 2915 Island Home Ave.

There will be time to hear a presentation about the status of trees in the city, as well as matters that will affect the city for many years to come. The presentation will be followed by time for questions and answers. Light refreshments will be served.
11.  Advance Knox Seeks Feedback

Do you care about growth and transportation in Knox County? Advance Knox needs your feedback!

Please complete this survey during Priorities Week by Sunday, April 9, to respond to a list of proposed transportation projects that will accompany a future land use plan for Knox County.
