South Knoxville/Knox County friends,

Bring your voice! Plan to attend the one of the Advance Knox Choices meeting on Sunday, October 2 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at New Hopewell Elementary School.

Advance Knox is an effort to define a vision and create a plan that will guide growth, land use, transportation, economic prosperity, and quality of life in the County for years to come.

This 18-month process will be the first time Knox County has created an integrated land use and transportation plan, and it has the potential to be transformative. It is crucial that this plan be built on the values, needs, and aspirations of people throughout the county, and be supported by good data. There will be multiple opportunities for community input and feedback throughout the process.

What are the Knox County growth scenarios?

Each scenario depicts a different outcome – what the county would look like – of three hypothetical plans for Knox County development and land use.

  • The "status quo" scenario outlines what the county would look like if long-term planning doesn't change much and development continues as it has for many years.
  • The "town and countryscenario predicts what the county would look like if future development happened in clusters like Northshore Town Center. Olsen said this scenario would establish hubs of retail and services in more places, bringing convenience to more rural areas or places where people have to drive miles to find a grocery store.
  • The "on the road againscenario would emphasize supporting development along roads and corridors that have existing infrastructure to support that investment, like Maynardville Pike or Schaad Road, Olsen said.

The Advance Knox committee and consultants will take the feedback to create the preferred scenario, which will be heavily studied by the experts and evaluated in a fiscal impact study.

After more public input early next year, the final plan will be considered by the Knoxville-Knox County Planning Commission and the Knox County Commission in the spring.
