1. Celebrating Black History Month
February is Black History Month, and there are many ways to celebrate – local events as well as a plethora of shops and spaces you can explore to enjoy the richness and diversity of our community, including:
The
Bottom (2340 E. Magnolia Ave.) is a Black-owned nonprofit bookstore and tea shop. They offer a variety of experiences, from events, to classes, to book subscriptions, all of which are written by Black authors.
The
Beck Cultural Exchange Center (1927 Dandridge Ave.) is the home of Black history in Knoxville. There are 11 main exhibits for guests to explore, including an archive of over 50,000 pieces of art, books, documents and more covering more than 200 years of
Black history, and the Civil Rights Corner, which chronicles how the Civil Rights Movement took shape in the Knoxville area.
To learn more about the City of Knoxville’s commitment to celebrating Black history, and the Black history of our city government, visit the
City of Knoxville website. |

All residents are welcome to join. If you have any questions about the NAC, please contact Debbie Sharp at
dsh...@knoxvilletn.gov or 865-215-4382.

3. City Offers Hands Only CPR and Stop The Bleed Workshops
February is American Heart Month, and the City is offering opportunities for residents to support community safety efforts and be prepared for emergencies.
The Office of Community Safety (OCS), Knoxville Fire Department (KFD), and the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE) are hosting two, community-wide
Hands Only CPR and
Stop The Bleed trainings, taught by certified KFD trainers and free for Knoxville residents. The first hour will be the Hands Only CPR, and the Stop The Bleed will be the second hour.
Workshops will be held at Larry Cox Senior Center, 3109 Ocoee Trail on:
-
Monday, Feb. 20, 6-8 p.m.
-
Saturday, Feb. 25, 9-11 a.m.
To register, contact Debbie Sharp at
dsh...@knoxvilletn.gov or 865-215-4382. Space is limited.
Please be aware: These are not certification classes. If you need certification for a job, please reach out to other groups, like the American Heart Association, to get certified in CPR and First Aid.
In addition to more community-wide Hands Only CPR and the Stop The Bleed workshops, which will be announced at a later date, your neighborhood, community group, or church group may request that KFD hold this training workshop at one of your monthly meetings
or a special event. We already have requests from several neighborhoods for this opportunity. This training can help save lives!

4. What is an Urban Forest Master Plan?
An Urban Forest Master Plan (UFMP) is a community-driven strategic plan to invest long-term in Knoxville's trees. The UFMP will serve as a guide for the Knoxville community to prioritize, preserve and grow our tree canopy over the next several decades.
Trees Knoxville is spearheading the project with support from the City of Knoxville, the Tennessee Division of Forestry, Keep Knoxville Beautiful and Knoxville Utilities Board.
The Master Plan needs your input! There are four ways you can participate:
-
Sign up to receive project updates at
www.KnoxvilleTreePlan.org.
-
Fill out the online survey at
https://www.knoxvilletreeplan.org/you-tell-us.html.
-
Sign up to have someone from the project’s Steering Committee discuss the project at a future meeting of your neighborhood group, community event, church groups, or other organizations that have interest in trees and their value in our community. Groups interested
in scheduling a guest to discuss the Urban Forest Master Plan should email the Urban Forester Kasey Krouse at
kkr...@knoxvilletn.gov to arrange.
-
Attend the Project Open House on April 20, 5:30 to 8 p.m. Location TBA (but we are looking at the Public Works Service Center Community Room at 3131 Morris Ave).
Please share these links with neighbors you know who might want to learn about the Urban Forest Master Plan process, give their input, and possibly get involved.

8. KAT Reimagined Draft Service Plan Is Now Available
The KAT Reimagined study is looking at KAT’s current service and how they can make it better by balancing the area they cover with how well they cover that area.
This study began by asking the community how to find balance that will encourage transit use in Knoxville and make it work effectively for as many people as possible.
Based on feedback received through an extensive public input process, the Knoxville Transportation Authority has directed transit consultants to develop a draft service plan in which 70% of KAT’s resources are focused on ridership goals, and 30% on coverage
goals. That draft service plan is now available for public review and comment through the end of the month.
Visit the study’s
website to read the Draft Network Report, see the routes that are proposed for changes and provide your feedback. You are encouraged to take the
online survey.
