This will be a highly energetic event set up for you to meet many city and county staff, non-profit organizations, have fun, connect with other neighbors and groups, etc. This event will be more casual and lively.

Be on the lookout for more information in future newsletters.

6.  Trees Knoxville Hosts Two Open Houses

This is a time to safely get rid of any unwanted paper that needs shredding.  That can include checks, receipts, legal documents, medical records, computer printouts, or personal files.  All types of office paper and materials are accepted.

Up to three small boxes, bags, totes, or crates per vehicle are allowed, and these will be returned once the paper has been securely disposed of.  The limit helps to ensure that everyone is able to dispose of their paper.  Multiple trips are allowed for those wishing to dispose of more than three poxes of paper.

This year’s Free Shred Day is sponsored by the Tennessee Army National Guard.

9.  Learn More about Tennessee Smart Yards

A Smart Yard is a yard that is in balance with the local environment for the benefit of both people and our ecosystem.

Tennessee Smart Yards is a University of Tennessee Agriculture Extension-led program that guides Tennesseans on practices they can apply in their outdoor spaces to create healthier, more ecologically-sound landscapes and communities. Nine principles of stewardship serve as the foundation for the program and are explored in online modules and practical workshops taught by UT-TSU Extension and water resource professionals.

You don’t have to be an expert gardener or landscaper to create a Tennessee Smart Yard. All it takes is a willingness to learn and a desire to take actions described in the Tennessee Smart Yard Workbook. Maintaining a Tennessee Smart Yard provides natural functionality for homeowners through working with nature for the benefit of both.

To learn more about this program and how to certify your yard, please visit UTK’s website.
