1. West Hills Celebrates National Night Out
West Hills Community Association celebrates National Night Out (NNO) tonight, Aug. 4, from 6-7:30 p.m. at West Hills Park near Sheffield Dr. Join neighbors in this fun, family-friendly event that celebrates local first responders from the Knoxville Police Department, Knoxville Fire Department, and Public Service Department.
The event will feature games, food trucks, and a crowd favorite: KFD's water spray. Activities will take place on Sheffield Drive near the greenway, across from West Hills Elementary School. While West Hills’ celebration of NNO aligns with the national date of recognition, the City of Knoxville, along with other cities and neighborhood groups opt to host NNO events on the alternate date, the first Tuesday in October, when the weather is cooler.

2. Schools Starts Monday
Knox County Schools begin classes on Monday, Aug. 10. Please watch out for children walking to and from school. Remember to pay attention to the flashing signs to let you know when to slow down! And, please don’t pass a bus that is loading or unloading children. We want to ensure safety for all.

3. Neighborhood Resource Fair Is One-Stop Shop
Neighborhoods thrive when residents know where to turn for help, information, and opportunities to connect.
The City of Knoxville’s annual Neighborhood Resource Fair brings these resources together in one place, making it easy for neighbors to discover services, meet community organizations, and strengthen connections across the city.
Join us on Saturday, Aug. 29, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the World’s Fair Exhibition Halls 1 & 2, 935 World’s Fair Park Drive, to visit booths from City and Knox County departments, local nonprofits, and community organizations ready to answer questions and connect residents with programs, services, and resources that can improve the quality of life in neighborhoods.
Whether you're looking for information about local services, volunteer opportunities, recreation programs, housing resources, or neighborhood initiatives, the fair offers something for everyone.
Residents are encouraged to pre-register to receive guaranteed meal vouchers for a concession stand combo meal and extra door prize tickets. Or show up at the door!
New this year: Second Harvest’s Mobile Pantry will be distributing free food boxes to visitors. It’s one more way the event supports families by connecting residents with valuable community resources.
Also look for:
- Games, face painting, Knoxville Smokies mascots
- Expired/unnecessary medication drop off
- Battery and electronics recycling
- Adoptable dogs from the Humane Society

4. City Hosts Stormwater Public Meetings
Over the past three years, the City of Knoxville Stormwater Department has analyzed our existing stormwater infrastructure. Residents are invited to attend one of the following public meetings to find out what we have learned and provide input on various components of stormwater.
- Tuesday, Aug. 11, 6-8 p.m., EV Davidson Recreation Center, 3124 Wilson Ave.
- Wednesday, Aug. 12, 6-8 p.m., Cecil Webb Recreation Center, 923 Baker Ave.
- Monday, Aug. 17, 6-8 p.m., Christenberry Recreation Center, 937 Oglewood Ave.
- Thursday, Aug. 20, 6-8 p.m. Deane Hill Recreation Center, 7414 Deane Hill Dr.
The current phase of the Stormwater project includes evaluation of the Stormwater Asset Survey, quantifying the City’s infrastructure maintenance needs into real dollars, and identifying options for how to fund future maintenance and improvements.

5. KPD Holds Commander Forum
Knoxville Police Department (KPD) will host their next Commander Forum on Thursday, Aug. 13, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Wallace Memorial Baptist Church, 701 Merchants Dr. This is for neighbors living in either East and West districts.
If you would like to learn more about crime trends in your area, have questions for the Knoxville Police Department officers, or would like to simply meet the officers that patrol Knoxville’s streets, join KPD at their Commander Forum.

6. City Seeks Crossing Guards for the 2026–2027 School Year
The City of Knoxville is currently seeking dependable and community-minded individuals to serve as School Crossing Guards for the 2026–2027 school year. Those interested can apply on the City’s website.
School Crossing Guards play a vital role in helping ensure the safety of students and families traveling to and from school each day. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community while supporting safe routes to school.
We are looking for individuals who are:
- Reliable and punctual
- Committed to student safety
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions
- Able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and motorists
School Crossing Guards are assigned to designated school crossing locations and assist students safely crossing streets before and after school.

7. Election Day is Thursday
If you did not vote during early voting, Thursday, Aug. 6, is Election Day and your last chance to cast a ballot for Knox County General Elections and the State and Federal Primary Elections.
On Election Day, you must vote at your precinct. Not sure where that is? Go to the Knox County Election Commission’s website to learn more. Some polling places have changed.
Your voice matters, so please get out and vote!

8. Engagement Continues with What’s Next Knoxville
The City of Knoxville is updating its Comprehensive Plan, a long-range document that guides decisions on land use, transportation, and investment priorities in the city for years to come. That planning and engagement process is called What’s Next Knoxville?
See what your neighbors had to say during the first round of engagement and let the project team know if anything is missing. They will use that input to help craft a vision statement and goals. Review the engagement summary and provide input online or talk to the project team at their headquarters at 30 Market Square on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. during the Market Square Farmers Market.

9. KAUL Provides New Shoes and School Supplies to Knoxville Kids
The Knoxville Area Urban League's (KAUL) Shoes for School event provides new shoes and school supplies to Knoxville’s children on Saturday, Aug. 8, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Covenant Health Park. This annual event has helped thousands of local children begin the school year with confidence.
To help ensure assistance reaches the families who need it most, shoe recipients must meet eligibility requirements and attend the event with the child who was registered. Organizers say this process helps direct resources to low-income and underserved families facing rising back to-school expenses. Shoes for Schools has grown significantly over the years, demonstrating Knoxville's commitment to helping local students succeed both in and out of the classroom.
Made possible through partnerships with agencies, businesses, volunteers, and community supporters, Shoes for School helps ensure children have the essentials they need to start the year prepared, while easing some of the financial strain many families face during the back-to school season.
