1.  Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day is a federal holiday honoring the life and birthday of one of the most influential civil rights leaders in American history. Although the holiday is observed annually on the third Monday of January, this year it is extra special because the holiday falls on King’s actual birthday, Jan. 15, 1929.

For events in Knoxville, visit the MLK Commemorative Commission’s website

The holiday is usually celebrated with marches, parades, speeches by civil rights leaders and politicians, and opportunities for community volunteering.  There is also special programming at museums and other cultural institutions. According to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, MLK Day is the only federal holiday that is "designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities.”

Take the time to immerse and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., how far we have come as a country to dismantle oppression of African Americans, and learn more about what we can do to help advance the rights and opportunities of all people.

Happy MLK Day!

8.  AAA Recommends Winter Driving Tips

AAA recommends the following winter driving tips:

  • Avoid driving while you're fatigued. Getting the proper amount of rest before taking on winter weather tasks reduces driving risks.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
  • Steer, brake, and accelerate smoothly. Sudden maneuvers cause skids.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half-full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
  • If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy, and snowy weather.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand).
  • If you get into a skid, always look and steer where you want to go.

Be sure to buckle up! Watch weather reports prior to a long-distance drive or before driving in isolated areas. Delay trips when especially bad weather is expected. If you must leave, let others know your route, destination, and estimated time of arrival. Avoid distractions – your full attention should be focused on operating the vehicle.

For additional winter driving tips or other On-The-Road information, go to: AAA website.

Stay safe this winter!
9.  Celebrate Korean American Day

Korean American Day celebrates the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to the US in 1903. In 2003, President George W. Bush recognized the 100th anniversary of the first arrival of Korean immigrants and on Jan. 13, 2005, Korean American Day was established and recognized as the official national holiday.

Korean culture, in general, has left a sizable footprint in the U.S. and has made valuable contributions.  It is on Korean American day that we honor and celebrate their contributions. It is a great day to delve into the rich and diverse history of Korean Americans, learn more about them, watch Korean-centered entertainment, and of course, enjoy K-Pop tunes and all the great Korean food we have in Knoxville.

The Knoxville Asian Festival will be on Saturday, Sept. 7-Sunday, Sept. 8.  For more information on this year’s Knoxville Asian Festival, see their website.
