The Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE) is now accepting nominations for Neighborhood Achievement Awards, which highlight accomplishments by neighborhood groups during the 2022 calendar year. Whether your organization is large or small, well established or brand new, your group is encouraged to submit a nomination. Winners receive $100 for their Neighborhood Organization to use on future initiatives.

Self-nominations are highly encouraged. Be proud of what you’ve done!

Examples of accomplishments include, but are not limited to:
  • Beautification and place-making projects, green spaces and community gardens, and other physical improvements to the neighborhood;
  • Projects, events, and activities that focus on connecting neighbors with one another, such as street fairs, potlucks, home tours, holiday celebrations, and neighbors helping neighbors;
  • New or ongoing communication efforts like newsletters, social media, and phone tree networks; and
  • Activities involved in launching, reviving, or strengthening a neighborhood group.
Don’t miss this opportunity to receive recognition for the important work you and your neighbors did in 2022. Applications for the Neighborhood Achievement Award are due Friday, Feb. 3.

6.  Community Safety Now Accepting Proposals for Youth Opportunities Grants

The Office of Community Safety is now accepting applications for the 2023 Spring Break Opportunity Youth Teens Micro Grant program.

The City of Knoxville seeks to provide grant funding to non-profit and community-based organizations, including neighborhood organizations, capable of providing high-quality programming and/or employment to Opportunity Youth, ages 14-19, in Knoxville during the week of Knox County Schools Spring Break (March 13-17, 2023). Proposals should specifically engage teens identified as being at highest-risk of involvement in violent crime based on Opportunity Youth criteria (see “How Funds Can be Used” section).

Check out the guidelines, and view the application.

Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023.

Awards may range between $500 - $3,000 and shall specifically support programming, stipends, payment, or other services directly for the Opportunity Youth engaged in programming.

Breaks in activities such as school and recreational programming provide opportunities to engage young people and provide expanded experiences that may not be feasible during regular programming hours. Connecting young people to positive networks and engaging them in opportunities associated with personal, community, and social development can begin the process of dismantling barriers to success, expanding perceptions of what is possible, and focusing on community strengths and assets.

This is a competitive process. Some applications may not be funded, and some may be only partially funded.

A post-project report of programs or activities administered, number and demographics of opportunity youth served, and impact of programming must be submitted at the end of the grant cycle.

7.  Learn About Bridging the Gap Toward Equity

Each January for Health Disparities Awareness Month, the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine raises awareness of health disparities through a series of presentations, which are available for viewing by the public via Zoom. The theme for 2023 is “Bridging the Gap Toward Equity.” Presentation topics include socioeconomic and environmental factors that affect health; cultural competency and cultural humility; care of LGBTQ+ patients; and more.

View a list of presentations and Zoom links at https://gsm.utmck.edu/about/HealthDisparities.cfm

On Jan. 18, Dr. Oluwaferanmi Okanlami will discuss his own struggle to define his personal and professional identity through a framework of intersectionality in a presentation titled “Disabusing Disability and Redefining Race.”

Dr. Oluwaferanmi Okanlami, MD, MS, is the Director of Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services at the University of Michigan, and he is also an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Urology at Michigan Medicine.

This free, virtual event will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 12-1 p.m.
