Participate in free health classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. at West Hills Park at the gazebo in front of the tennis courts, 410 N. Winston Rd. These classes will continue indefinitely as long as the weather permits.

Sweat for Success was started by Izzy Villegas to promote health and wellness in Tennessee by providing free fitness classes in the park as well as showcasing other groups and organizations who also encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. The class instructor, Izzy, says, “Fitness doesn’t have to be costly or intimidating. It can be accessible regardless of your fitness level, background, or financial situation.” Izzy aims to create a space where people feel connected, strong, and empowered.

These classes are open to all fitness levels, and restrooms are available.

For more information about the classes, please contact Izzy Villegas at izzyvil...@yahoo.com.

Don’t forget – participating in these classes counts as Healthy Knoxville programming! If your neighborhood would like to participate in the Healthy Knoxville Program, please contact Hayley Howard at hho...@knoxvilletn.gov.

4.  NAC Meets Next Week

The Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) will meet next Wednesday, May 14, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Public Works Building, 3131 Morris Ave.

NAC members will hear from Fiona McAnally, the Director of Government Relations for the City of Knoxville.

Consisting of neighborhood leaders from around the city, the NAC serves in an advisory and partnership capacity to:
  • Give advice and feedback on the programs and policies of the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment,
  • Bring neighborhood issues and concerns to the attention of the Mayor and City Administration,
  • Propose to the Administration responses and solutions to address these concerns; and
  • Serve as a sounding board for city initiatives and proposals affecting neighborhoods.
The NAC advises and provides input only to the Mayor and the City Administration. As a matter of policy, it does not advise Knoxville City Council, Knoxville-Knox County Planning, and other elected and appointed bodies. All are welcome to attend.

The City of Knoxville ensures meaningful access to City programs, services, and activities to comply with Civil Rights Title VI and ADA Title II laws and reasonably provides translation, interpretation, modifications, accommodations, alternative formats, auxiliary aids and services.

5.  ONE Schedules Neighborhood Social Exchanges

All neighborhood organizations and individuals wanting to organize their communities are invited to the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment’s Neighborhood Social Exchange gatherings.

There will be two to choose from:
  • Thursday, May 15, from 5-7 p.m., at the Larry Cox Center, 3109 Ocoee Trail
  • Friday, May 16, from 1-3 p.m. at the City County Building, 400 W Main St. Suite 546B.
The Neighborhood Social Exchange is an opportunity for neighborhood leaders to network with one another, provide updated information regarding elections and boundaries to ONE, and to receive information about programming offered by our office. This is also a great opportunity for new groups interested in learning more about organizing their neighborhood.

This exchange of information and ideas will be coupled with food, fun, and games. Come and see what resources and programming are available to you and your neighborhood!

6.  Parks and Recreation Is Seeking Feedback on Master Plan

The Parks and Recreation Department‘s Master Plan is a 10-month community planning process, designed to identify parks and recreation needs in the city, anticipate future demand, and build a shared vision for improvements to the parks and recreation system.

There are two more public meetings:
  • Wednesday, May 14, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Lakeshore Park, 5930 Lyons View Pike
  • Tuesday, May 20, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Central Baptist Church Fountain City Family Life Center (enter off Lynnwood Dr.), 5364 N Broadway St
The plan is designed to:
  • Identify parks and recreation needs in the city
  • Anticipate future demand
  • Build a shared vision for improvements to the parks and recreation system
Knoxville is experiencing population growth, with an estimated increase of close to 10,000 residents in the last five years. This growth requires understanding how all residents, both new and old, can be equitably served by the parks and recreation system, particularly as the city continues to grow.

Parks and Recreation would love to hear your thoughts on improving Knoxville’s parks and recreation programs. Community feedback is a primary goal of the plan, and this feedback will ensure that the plan’s recommendations are citizen-driven.

You can share input in-person, at a public meeting, or a community event, or even on the Knoxville Parks Plan website. Thanks in advance for your input. Happy trails!
