1. Neighborhoods Rally to Replace Stolen Art
As many of you may have heard, a sculpture of children reading on a bench was stolen from Thomas “Tank” Strickland Park in East Knoxville, next to the Burlington Branch Library. WATE Channel 6 reported on the
theft and interviewed Sharon Davis, of
Historic Holston Hills Community Club, a neighbor who originally helped raise money to place the statue in the park. She was distraught to see that it had been stolen.
Derek Tate, of the Michael Meadowview Neighborhood Watch, has organized a fundraiser, along with the Knoxville East Lyons Club, to help raise funds to replace the art.
Please give if you are able and/or share this
link with your neighborhood groups.
The park, which opened 14 years ago on a former gas station site, was named after the former county commissioner and longtime community leader Thomas “Tank” Strickland, who died in 2023. You can read more about the park’s dedication in 2010 and see a picture
of the bench on

2. Wiffleball Registration Deadline is Friday
The deadline to register a team for our seventh annual Wiffleball Tournament is this Friday, Sept. 20. Three teams are signed up:
West Hills Community Association, Westwood Homeowners Association, and
Parkridge Community Organization.
Game Day is Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 9 a.m. at Caswell Park, 570 Winona St.
If you can’t get a team together, still come out and cheer on Knoxville neighborhoods!
Located just east of downtown Knoxville,
Caswell Park includes four softball fields, Ridley Helton baseball field, the beloved and accessible Ashley’s Dream playground,
First Creek Greenway and many other amenities, including restrooms and concession stands.
Fun fact: the park is named for William Caswell, a well-known Captain and then Attorney General for Tennessee, who donated land to the City for construction of a public park, including a ballfield, in 1916. Caswell was a longtime baseball fan, having participated
in what may have been the first game played in Tennessee, a 1865 contest between the Holstons and the Knoxvilles.
With questions about the wiffleball tournament, please reach out to Shannett Riley at
sri...@knoxvilletn.gov. Hope to see you there!

6. Celebrate World Gratitude Day
World Gratitude Day, Saturday, Sept. 21, is a celebration of the things we have in our lives. By taking the time to reflect on the things we are grateful for, people can display their appreciation through positive actions.
The celebration began in Hawaii in 1965 when a gathering of individuals from around the world decided that it would be a great idea to take one day per year to formally express gratitude for the things and people in our lives and the world.
