1.  City Offers Hands-Only CPR and Stop the Bleed Workshops

February is American Heart Month, and the City is offering opportunities for residents to support community safety efforts and be prepared for emergencies.

The Office of Community Safety (OCS), Knoxville Fire Department (KFD), and the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE) are hosting two, community-wide Hands-Only CPR and Stop the Bleed trainings, taught by certified KFD trainers and free for Knoxville neighbors. The first hour will be the Hands-Only CPR, and the Stop the Bleed will be the second hour.

Workshops will be held at Larry Cox Senior Center, 3109 Ocoee Trail on:
  • Monday, Feb. 20, 6-8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 25, 9-11 a.m.
To register, contact Debbie Sharp at dsh...@knoxvilletn.gov or 865-215-4382. Space is limited.

Please be aware: These are not certification classes. If you need certification for a job, please reach out to other groups, like the American Heart Association, to get certified in CPR and First Aid.

In addition to more community-wide Hands-Only CPR and the Stop the Bleed workshops, which will be announced at a later date, your neighborhood, community group, or church group may request that KFD hold this training workshop at one of your monthly meetings or a special event. We already have requests from several neighborhoods for this opportunity. This training can help save lives!

Some facts about heart health:
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.
  • One person dies every 34 seconds in the U.S. from cardiovascular disease.
  • About 697,000 people in the U.S. died from heart disease in 2020—that’s 1 in every 5 deaths.
  • Heart disease cost the U.S. about $229 billion each year from 2017 to 2018. This includes the cost of health care services, medicines, and lost productivity due to death.

Using the internationally acknowledged Vision Zero principles, the City’s Office of Sustainability is evaluating high-injury networks and community concerns in an effort to eliminate life-altering crashes. As part of this work, the City’s Vision Zero (VZ) team wants to hear from you!

If your neighborhood association, social club, church group, workplace, or other entity would like to learn more, invite a member of our Vision Zero team to your next regularly scheduled meeting. The facilitator will conduct a 30- to 45-minute discussion about your traffic safety concerns. To schedule, reach out to a member of our team using the following email to schedule an in-person or virtually meeting for your group: sustain...@knoxvilletn.gov.

5.  KAT Requests Feedback on Reimagined Draft Network

Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) seeks public input on the latest draft of the KAT Reimagined project. Residents are encouraged to attend one of the in-person public meetings taking place later this month to provide feedback.
  • Thursday, Feb. 23, 5-7 p.m., 301 East Church Ave.
  • Saturday, Feb. 25, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., 301 East Church Ave.
The KAT Reimagined study is looking at KAT’s current service and how they can make it better by balancing the area they cover with how well they cover that area.

This study began by asking the community how to find balance that will encourage transit use in Knoxville and make it work effectively for as many people as possible.

Based on feedback received through an extensive public input process, the Knoxville Transportation Authority (KTA) has directed transit consultants to develop a draft service plan in which 70% of KAT’s resources are focused on ridership goals, and 30% on coverage goals. That draft service plan is now available for public review and comment through the end of the month.

Visit the study’s website to read the Draft Network Report, see the routes that are proposed for changes and provide your feedback.

If you are unable to attend an in-person meeting, please take the online survey.
6.  Health Department Offers Free Heart Health Series

The Knox County Health Department (KCHD) is teaching a two-part Heart Health Series on Thursday, March 9 and 16, from 6-7 p.m.

Classes will be taught in-person at the KCHD, 140 Dameron Ave., in the Community Room.

Registration is required; please call 865-215-5170 to sign up. Classes are free, and all are welcome.
7.  Keep Knoxville Beautiful Hosts North Clean-Up

Keep Knoxville Beautiful (KKB) will host the fifth annual North Knoxville Community Clean-Up on Saturday, March 4, 9 a.m.-12 noon. The event will kick off at Northgate Plaza, 4212 N. Broadway.

The North Knoxville Community Cleanup is KKB’s largest cleanup effort in North Knoxville each year. KKB is now seeking groups and individuals to participate in the 2023 cleanup. Volunteers can register on the website.

Leaders from North Knoxville neighborhoods and local community organizations will collect clean-up supplies at the home base in Northgate Plaza and then return to volunteers waiting at their designated locations to pick up litter. Participating groups include Old North Knox, Inc, North Hills Neighborhood Watch, UT Scabbard and Blade, and L&N STEM Key Club.
