Dear team,

I hope you are doing very well. I am reaching out to you in order to request a bit of help from you. I am doing a comparison of open-source model and I wanted to counter check the available attributes in switch model with you. Following is my understanding to attributes available in switch (from the material available publicly about the model):

Attributes

  • Optimisation of long-term capacity expansion: yes
  • Representation of transmission grid and cost of reinforcements for distribution grid: No
  • Carbon market/price:  Not sure (if you can please clarify)
  • Heat/Gas sector: Yes
  • Electric vehicles (V2G and G2V): covers transport sector
  • Hydrogen tech. (no full spectrum): Not sure (if you can please clarify)
  • Inertia (freq. response):  Not sure (if you can please clarify)
  • Carbon offsets: Only CCS available
  • Flexibility options: No DR (is energy storage batteries available?)
  • Demand segments: No (commercial, industrial, residential, transport, heating, hydrogen)

Can you please help me check if my understanding is correct and please correct me if I am wrong? Thanks so much for your time.

Following is my understanding to attributes available in switch (from the material available publicly about the model):

Attributes

  • Optimisation of long-term capacity expansion: yes
  • Representation of transmission grid and cost of reinforcements for distribution grid: yes (transmission network can be represented as a transport model or, experimentally, using AC power flow; distribution upgrade costs are modeled as an all-in cost-per-MW to serve regional loads net of distributed generation)
  • Carbon market/price: yes (Switch can model a carbon cost, carbon cap and/or renewable portfolio standard)
  • Heat/Gas sector: partial (some ability to represent gas infrastructure and upgrades; heat delivery or other sectors can be added as user-defined modules)
  • Electric vehicles (V2G and G2V): G2V; V2G could be implemented as a user-defined module
  • Hydrogen tech. (no full spectrum): yes, in the hawaii regional extensions (also usable for other regions)
  • Inertia (freq. response):  no; could be implemented as a user-defined module
  • Carbon offsets: Only CCS available
  • Flexibility options: yes (batteries, hydrogen, smart charging of vehicles including highly disaggregated fleets, simple and arbitrarily complex forms of price-responsive demand)
  • Demand segments (commercial, industrial, residential, transport, heating, hydrogen): partial (conventional electricity, transport and hydrogen electricity storage)

Can you please help me check if my understanding is correct and please correct me if I am wrong? Thanks so much for your time.
