In our demonstration you have received a Primavera P6 XER file that has been created in version 15.1 and your version is 6.2. Your older version of Primavera P6 will not import this newer version P6 XER file. You are not without hope though.

Assuming your operating system is Microsoft Windows 7 and the file in question is saved to your desktop, right click on the XER file icon and select Open With > Choose Default Programs from the resulting menu, Figure 1.

Note the first number displayed in the first row of the file. This is the version number, which for our demonstration is 15.1. Simply change this version number to your compatible version of choice. In our demonstration we change it to version 6.2 and save the file, Figure 5.

Important Note: This technique works great with the exception of Primavera P6 15.2.3 where Oracle added a checksum to the XER and XML files to identify whether the XML/XER has been modified externally. However, in Primavera P6 15.2.5 Oracle then removed the checksum.

A simple, yet sometimes, crucial tip is to edit your XER file to change the version number to make it compatible to your installation of Primavera P6 Professional. This process will vary slightly depending on your operating system. The Microsoft Notepad works well as an editor in Windows version 7 or later. The key is to locate the XER file version number on the first row of the data file.

As of 2008 Primavera Systems supported long-established products - P3 and Sure-Trak - and the newer P6 version. The long-standing P3 product in its various forms was used by 25% of the heavy construction industry, its predominant customer base; the next most popular software was used by 11%.[4] Nearly 40% of general contractors with an annual revenue of $5M to $10M used Primavera P3. In comparison, the P6 version did not register in a CFMA 2008 survey of the United States construction industry. The P3 version to P6 version change is based in a move from DOS-type shortcut keys to mouse-based icons. Thus, a software application that was once very fast to use but grounded in shortcut functions (which some users found difficult to master) moved to a mouse-based application that is quick to learn but once mastered never achieves the same speed of use. The Primavera Project Planner DOS core launched in 1983[5] and the P3 Windows interface launched in 1994.[6]

In April 2013, Oracle Corporation announced the release of version 8.4 of Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management.[9] This version incorporated material from Oracle's acquisitions of Skire and Instantis in 2012.[10]

Primavera has been targeted by extortionists as a way to efficiently compromise digital business assets through fixable software security flaws, leading to a higher return in the usage of ransomware.[11] A security patch is available for most of such exploits.[12]

At the end of 2022, Oracle released its newest version of P6: Primavera P6 Professional 22.12. Although P6 is such a seasoned product, these updates always manage to add a variety of new features. These added capabilities give users more flexibility in viewing and managing project schedules.

This also aids adjusting activity data. You can copy and paste or drag and drop activities from one screen to another. This can be useful if you need to move activities from the top WBS layer to the bottom. Instead of having to drag and drop down a long schedule, we can configure the page and drag and drop from one screen to another.

Once run, the program will analyze the project and provide a score for each metric. Much like the Schedule Log, you can save this report as an external HTML. This report will give you a list of activities that have passed the target metric. You can use this data to identify and fix any issues within your current project schedule.

Since Primavera P6 20.4, filters with finish date fields would select the end of the time frame. For example, if you set the Finish Date to Current Day, the field would look for the end of the current day. In earlier versions of the program, this worked the opposite. Prior to P6 20.4, Finish Date fields in filters would select the beginning of the time frame.

Albeit a small change, P6 22.12 introduced the ability to arrange the order of Sort fields. When creating a Sort order in the Group and Sort window, you can now move sort columns up or down to rearrange them. This allows you to adjust the primary Sort order as needed.

When working with spreadsheets in P6, you can now copy and paste values from a range of cells. This will work for the Resource Usage Spreadsheet and the Resource Assignments page. On these pages, you can track the planned and actual units and costs for assigned resources. You can also assign units and costs on these pages using future bucket planning.

Copying a range of cells allows you to select and copy several cells within a spreadsheet row. You can also paste these values, and all copied cells will paste within the selected row. To copy a range of cells, select the cells, right-click and select Copy Range. Copy Range also has a keyboard shortcut of Shift+Ctrl+C. To paste the cells, either right-click and select Paste Range or press Shift+Ctrl+V.

IPMDAR stands for Integrated Program Management Data Analysis Report. This is the project format required by the US Department of Defense. For users who need to use this file type, this addition will save a lot of time.

Another minor change, but P6 22.12 allows you more options when importing in XML project files. When you import an XML file into P6, you will be able to pick and choose exactly what data to import into the database. For example, if your imported project uses a resource already in the database, you can choose whether to import that data in as a new resource. This is done through Import Templates. By default, the program will select the Default Import Template while importing. However, you can edit this template or create new templates as needed. The Default Import Template has the program keeping all existing data in the database if the XML file matches it.

In previous versions of P6, these templates could not be copied. This meant that if a user needed to make a minor change for a new template, they would have to create it from scratch. With the release of P6 22.12, users can now duplicate templates. This will save a lot of time when creating new templates.

You can duplicate import/export templates when importing or exporting a project. When you get to the Update Project Options screen, select the desired template and press Duplicate. A copy of the template will appear in the list and you can then modify it as needed.

In P6 22.12, you can now choose what to do with OBS assignments when projects are moved among EPS layers. The OBS (Organizational Breakdown Structure) allows you to assign a responsible manager to projects and EPS layers. The OBS determines which users can access the project data. When you create a new project or a new EPS layer, you will be prompted to assign a responsible manager from the OBS. In this way, you can choose exactly who can open and work with the project.

Now, users can determine how they want these OBS assignments handled. In the Assistance tab of the User Preferences, you can now choose what to do with the assigned responsible manager. You can choose to either retain the responsible manager for the project, or assign the responsible manager from the new EPS layer.

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

How often would you upgrade your P6 to the latest version? I know people that refused to upgrade and they are still using P6 v6 and it works perfect for them. They are basically doing the same job I am doing with my v15.2. It appear that primavera makes its money from the yearly support fee but is it really worth it to pay for the year support after the first year you are required to buy. At the current rate, the yearly support fee will buy a new P6 licensce in the 5th year. Would you pay for the support on a yearly basis or buy a new P6 license every 5 years. What do you think

I dont forsee any of the items listed ever been a major issue. I would prefer not to do a regular ugrade unless we absolutely have to. Maybe upgrading from P3 to P6. The only benefit I see to the yearly support is the ability to talk directly to oracle agents. Most of my P6 issue can sometime be troubleshooted with google.

4. CON fall if you have written any in-house P6 training manuals they will have to be re written based on the new features especially if you are using scren shots in your manuals. This is a huge undertraking.
