Science Writers in New York Invites You to A Triple Pandemic this Winter?  A Virtual Conversation with New York Times Reporter Apoorva Mandavilli Tuesday, November 22, at 7 PM ET on Zoom

Science Writers in New York is proud to present our second evening with New York Times reporter Apoorva Mandavilli (@apoorva_nyc), who has been covering the pandemic since it began. Apoorva will talk to SWINY co-chair David Levine (@dlloydlevine) about her experiences reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic, monkeypox, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).  The CDC says this will be the worst flu season in years. Already flu cases are higher this year than in past years and are expected to peak in the coming months. RSV is straining pediatric hospitals in many cases and there are new strains of COVID-19 out there coinciding with colder temperatures causing people to move indoors just as holiday season approaches. Are we facing the threat of a triple pandemic?

About Apoorva Mandavilli

Apoorva Mandavilli is a reporter for The New York Times, focusing on science and global health. She is the 2019 winner of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing’s Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting.

She is the founding editor in chief of Spectrum, an award-winning news site on autism science that grew an audience of millions. She led the team there for 13 years. She joined The New York Times in May 2020, after two years as a regular contributor. Apoorva has won numerous awards for her writing. Her work has been published in The Atlantic, Slate, and The New Yorker online, and in the anthology Best American Science and Nature Writing. She co-founded Culture Dish, an organization dedicated to enhancing diversity in science journalism, and was the founding chair of the Diversity Committee for the National Association of Science Writers. Apoorva has a master of arts degree in journalism from New York University and a master of science degree in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
