Session One: January 19, 2024 — 1 - 2 p.m. ET/ 10 - 11 a.m. PT

What Can Geneticists Do to Prevent the Misuse of Genomic Data?

Recent, but reemergent misuses of genetic data and research remain a critical issue in the scientific and public spheres. While many scientists are concerned about how their own research might be misused by nefarious actors, training or advice about best practices in this area remains sparse. In this first of a two-series event, this webinar will provide a forum for the discussion of practical actions for scientists interested in preventing the misuse of genetic data and research by white supremacists and others. (The second session will focus on combatting the misuse of genetic data and research once it has happened). Panelists will speak to scientists and researchers with perspectives from the media and education scholarship, with a focus on several prevention strategies, such as changing genetics curriculum, identifying often misused areas of genetic science, clearly communicating findings, preparing a media strategy, etc. Group discussion will be directed around one recent misuse of genetic research related to the supermarket shooting in Buffalo, NY.

Session Two: January 26, 2024 — 1 - 2 p.m. ET/ 10 - 11 a.m. PT

In this second of a two-series event, this webinar will provide a forum for the discussion of practical actions for scientists interested in addressing the misuse of their genetic data and research. (The first session focused on preventing the misuse of genetic data and research.) Panelists will include a quantitative geneticist and journalist, who will focus on pragmatic strategies that scientists can take in this area, such as how to interact with the media and navigating misuse cases in industry. Group discussion will be focused on potential misuse in the case of embryo selection.
