Public health holds the solutions to our most concerning health crises, from COVID-19 to obesity, yet public health constantly loses out to medical care for attention and resources.

On November 17, SWINY co-chair David Levine (@dlloydlevine) will talk with physician and public health advocate Michael D. Stein (@mdsteinmd) about his new book Me vs. Us: A Health Divided (Oxford University Press, September 2022). In Me vs. Us, Dr. Stein offers eight reasons why our interest in the technologies and delivery of health care supersedes our interest in public health and its focus on the core social, economic, and environmental forces that shape health.

The misplaced emphasis on health care endangers us. It puts us at risk because the solutions to our most concerning health crises, from obesity to climate change, will not come from self-concern or individual actions but from the “Us” perspective of public health.

About Dr. Michael D. Stein

Michael Stein, MD, is a physician, health policy researcher, and thought leader in the field of public health. He currently serves as the chair and professor of health law, policy and management at the Boston University School of Public Health.

Prior to his appointment at Boston University, he served as professor of medicine and director of behavioral medicine and addiction research at Brown University. For the past three decades, Dr. Stein has produced work that has spanned the topics of sleep and pain, addiction and HIV/AIDS, mental health and behavioral risk-taking, health care access and quality. He has published more than 400 scientific journal articles. In the public space, he has published widely in the lay press, including in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and The New York Times. His work has been featured on NPR’s Fresh Air, in O Magazine and in many other publications. He is the author of 11 books and is the executive editor of Public Health Post.
