Dear Science Writing Community,
Significant membership support is critical to SWINY's ability to provide events for the science writing community—events that variously edify, expand one's craft, and enable networking/socializing. We're not referring only to attending live and virtual events, but also to the resulting YouTube videos of these events that are posted on our website and freely accessible to everyone.
The basic components that sustain what we do—including the free-to-all YouTube videos—come at a cost. SWINY pays an annual website fee. We pay for the expertise to maintain and modify our website when we lack a Board member able to do this (our current reality).
Our Zoom subscription supports our virtual events and their translation to the YouTube videos available on our website. Currently, our live events are graciously hosted by a generous SWINY supporter. But SWINY pays the videographer who films the presentation and then produces the YouTube video. And we want to be able to rent space for events that cannot be accommodated by our kind sponsor. When SWINY hosts an evening gathering at a local bar, we treat attendees to their first drink. And when SWINY hosts an annual party, we pay for any costs not covered by the attendee ticket fee.
Thus we need broad membership support. We send a profound thank-you to everyone on SWINY's current membership roster. And we urge the rest of you who benefit from SWINY's offerings to become members as well. It is only $30 for the calendar year, and gains you free access to Elsevier's Science Direct, exclusive job listings and a discount for any SWINY fee-requiring event. We look forward to welcoming you!
