In the 1970s, Jamaica was obliged to seek money from the IMF. The price to be paid involved opening the island up to the world economy. This has in practice meant, more tourists, but also more sweatshop-style industries. Under the pressure of competition with American imports, Jamaican agriculture has collapsed.
