so.... I all the parts printed, assembled all the relevant screws, prepped the electronics and generally put a nice simple kit together for the kids. This evening, they helped put the thing together and we stuck an egg in to check the mechanicals were all working properly (no electronics).... and no, they weren't really. This design is crap... there's loads of play in the spring loaded arm, it's very hard to keep the frame in alignment and the pen lift spring is the wrong shape (doesn't allow the servo to correctly align with the arm). I'm genuinely surprised, having seen lots of these online I figured it was a fairly tried/tested design. Bloody annoying.
In the meantime, my 3d printer has developed a recurring extruder jam (cleared it 4 times in the last two days), which means I don't seem to be able to print anything reliably - grr.
time for some brain-numbing TV whilst I re-motivate myself to fix the printer and design a new egg-bot :)
