Hello all

Just a reminder of the meeting I am organising next Thursday in Aberdeen to discuss issues surrounding personal privacy and the Web of Linked Data.  We will be discussing how, by linking even a little bit of information provided by a user, with other data sets, it is possible to infer some information about the user and possibly violate their privacy.  If you are interested in privacy, linked data, and/or ethics, and would like to attend, please register your interest using the form at http://www.dotrural.ac.uk/privacywld or drop me an email.

Thanks,

David

Event name: Personal Privacy and the Web of Linked Data
Location: Room 810, MacRobert Building, University of Aberdeen
Date: Thursday 14th June 2012
Time: 10:00 - 16:00
As part of the EPSRC-funded Framework for Responsible Research and Innovation in ICT initiative, the dot.rural Digital Economy Hub is hosting a one day meeting to discuss issues surrounding personal privacy and the Web of Linked Data. The event aims to bring together academic and non-academic participants with an interest in linked data, privacy, and ethics to identify a set of scenarios illustrating how the use of linked data could be used to violate user privacy. Given the potentially sensitive nature of information often collected from users, ensuring privacy is vital. However, in a linked data environment this is more challenging than simply removing clearly identifying features, as linked datasets may (under some circumstances) be used to infer a user's identity . The scenarios identified in this meeting will be used to inform the creation of a set of ethical principles/guidelines for those working to build linked data applications involving personal data. A set of sample datasets from the dot.rural Informed Rural Passenger (IRP) project will be used to help motivate discussions. The number of attendees for this event is limited to a maximum of 10, in order to ensure a focused discussion.

The organisers are able to provide a contribution towards expenses associated with participation in the event. Those interested in attending are invited to submit an expression of interest, briefly summarising their background and perspectives on personal privacy and the Web of Linked Data, by 23:59 on Friday 8th June 2012 using the form at http://www.dotrural.ac.uk/privacywld

Please send any enquiries to David Corsar at dco...@abdn.ac.uk
