Hello John - Welcome to the Swift group. Just for clarity, while I have designed and built a few boats and rebuilt even more of them, I have not built a Swift Solo. I do have a pretty good perspective on the creativity necessary to build and/or rig and/or repair a boat. Keep us posted on your progress - Philip

John, thanks for your question!!  It's time to introduce you to a few fellow Swifties.

Mark White

Philip Ryan

Robert Harper

These three fine people represent a wealth of knowledge and experience in building Swift Solo and always have good and balanced point of view

All please meet each other!! Mark Philip and Robert please meet John who has purchased plans and manual, lives in Rhode Island is just embarking in building a Swift … John choice is not to join the Google Group so I though I would introduce John to you three to help answer questions on his journey building the Swift.

First question: "I’ve looked up the recommended delta router bits #56-975, doesn’t seem to exist. Aside a 1/2 shaft, do you have the specs for this bit so I can find a similar one?”

Please help John out,

John when asking question please copy all four of us .. I am sure we can help you out.

As note John has the Manual but not plans which I am still working on as I am have a lot of difficulty with the new V6 of the Rhino program, but I’ll get there soon.

All the  best Paul

Sorry Philip, I originally only replied to you. It should have gone to the list.

John, try this link https://www.toolstoday.com/v-9443-54176.html?glCountry=US&glCurrency=USD&ne_ppc_id=10371521939&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxNT8BRD9ARIsAJ8S5xbxma04qWewZIoMCDMYCF0vUSLRYho2QhqFQzK-P6AaUyocKOEuNeEaAu3jEALw_wcB

Make sure you get the 1/4" set.

I built my Swift, famously in an old chicken coup. Mark White is the master. No one has come close to the quality of construction nor beauty of the final boat. Most of the expense is in the rigging. Much of the hull can be built in a few hours on nights and weekends. When you get to the epoxy and fiberglass, you need to have at least eight hours with nothing but the boat to deal with. Send the family and pets on a day outing.

Milling your own strips is a lot of work but you can save at least a thousand on the costs.

John Bartlett,
Welcome to the Swift Solo group.  You may try mlcswoodworking.com for Flute and Bead Router bits, as they carry a Stacked bit #5416 ($28.95) that I used to mill strips for USA020 and USA040.  The stacked bit allows you to switch between milling cove or bead by moving the bit up or down in the chuck.  I built the boat while living in Barrington, RI and purchased 14-16 ft x 5/4 flat sawn clear western red cedar decking to rip into 1/4” quarter sawn strips with the vertical grain you need for planking and decking.  Please reach out for help and this group will respond.  Best wishes.
