Hey,
Whoever is doing the googlegroup admin, please check "sherurdfluellen73772" <sherurdflu...@gmail.com>  I (and probably everyone else) just received a note from this person with a link to a porn site.  Please remove him from the group.

Thanks
Chris Rudesill

I would have thought that google groups would be a bit better about managing spam, but I guess not.

In any case, all these senders have been banned, and their messages removed from the archives.

I just tweaked the settings on the group so that posts sent by new members are moderated.  Periodically, I'll go in and do the moderation.  Given that we're getting a burst of spam coming through, I'm assuming that most new members are spambots.  We'll see how that works.

Sorry about the inconvenience.

Since it looks like someone has bots, can we get bots that do a DOS on
their bots?

I think that the google team needs to get on this. I'm sure if we're being
hit, it is probably system wide.

Warren has done the best thing possible by forcing moderation of first
posts. Replying to these spam posts is a disaster - what you do is
confirm to the spammer that there are people on the list, so they set
the email address of the group as "worth spamming", hence you get more
and more spam. Many spammers also put "opt-out" links on their spam to
make you think clicking on it will get you removed from their system -
it ends up causing more spam as you are confirming there is someone there.

I doubt anyone from Google will do anything about this - they make their
money from advertising, not supplying free customer service. Good email
clients have the ability to set filters based on keywords - I have a
huge list of words that are in a filter - if one of these words is in an
email, it gets deleted automatically.

The crazy thing is the computers the spammers are using don't belong to
them - they are usually computers belonging to Mom & Pop, USA that have
been cracked to use as spambots. These cracked computers appear and
disappear so fast on the Internet that Google can't block them - by the
time a block is put in place, the computer is no longer sending spam.

I agree with you but if you were to set up a bot that blocked access to
the return site and also used some other resource than your own. You could
deny their attempt at making a profit from this. True I start to look a
lot like the bad guy too but it could be a bit of poetic justice.

I think the proper use of a good bot would be to counter someone else's
bot. You could have bot wars kind of like those robot wars you see on the
BBC. It could be fun if you could show activity and results.
