Hi Guys...we are 3 in Penticton keen to get on the water....I have a gun and some pro set...does that work well on the mast track?....specs seem to suggest it will be fine....any comments?

Look forward to comments at your earliest.

Cheers,

Ian

Ian,
Pro-Set is designed for bonding fiber-reinforced composites, wood, steel, aluminum and concrete.  The sail track on the Forte masts is made of acrylic, so Plexus is the proper adhesive for that application.

There were some folks who bonded the sail track with pro set, and they all promptly peeled off. Epoxy does not come even close to the toughness that is required, nor the surface etching that is needed to get a chemical bond on the sail track. Methacrylate adhesive with high flexibility is the only thing that works.
Rules to remember:
- mechanical bonds do not work. Molecular/chemical bond is a must.
- The adhesive must have extremely high toughness and shear strength. (shear strength + flexibility + elongation)

I hope you can find a source for some MA530 Plexus.

Thanks Philip. Yes I did find a source. Actually I had horseshoe’s up you know where with all of this. Got the glue from Robin who happened to be in the area. Also happened to have the gun from Ian who came up from Vancouver to sail. All of this would have been for not; I happened to have the correct mixing “stinger” in my workshop that fitted!

All three of us (Mike,Ian and myself) got out on the water today. Light winds which suited me fine!

Hi there,

I am very glad that the glue worked out. I picked up the smaller gun and parts yesterday on our way to Nelson. No charge for the glue, I don't need any this year anyway, so it was destined for the landfill anyway.
It was very heartening to see the three rigged Swifts lined up by the lake!
I am hoping that we can schedule an event at Summerland next year, I would definitely bring my boat up for that.
As discussed, perhaps we could get a start in the Summerland regatta...or join some other fleet or X-class.
Fair winds and following seas to all..

Thanks Robin. That’s incredible generous of you!

Here’s something for you to mull over; I could buzz over and pick you up for some Swift sailing in Summerland? You’re welcome to sail my boat. Three boats and four sailors. We can make that work.

The Vancouver controlled airspace is of course much quieter these days. Should be able to fly Kelowna direct to Hope then direct to Victoria. That’s about 1.5 hours.

Think about it...

Flying in to a sailing regatta? Now that's living! Might have to wait until next year though, it turns out that nobody was doing my job while I was on holidays!
Thanks for the offer, I haven't been in a small plane in many years.
