How is everyone feeling about the regatta with the huge spike in COVID

The other worry I have is if they impose mandatory quarantines.
Kameron was supposed to be here for a sister in-law's wedding but
Chicago, where he is now, states that if he travels to Utah,
California, and some other states, he and his fiancee would have to
quarantine for 14 days and she would lose out on her clinical rotation
to graduate so they aren't coming out. That would mess a lot of us up.
Probably not me, Utah isn't that smart.

My opinion is that we stay open to the possibility of doing NA's in Utah in Sept. But there is no guarantee about that either.
CA is a bit smarter than most other states, so they may prevent those of us from dumber states from entering if the spike gets big and lasts longer than the previous one (read ICU overload).
As for consequences of violence, that seems to be limited to those who decide to get out of their car and join a march in a big city. Not very likely in Huntington - I'm not really worried about that. Just don't use inner city, redneck truck stops to refuel!
I think we just need to keep an eye on what policies are being rolled out and make the reasonable decision when the time comes.
On a personal note, my rehab and recovery is going super well, but there is no denying that it would be a little less risky for my arm if we did NA's in Sept. Aug is theoretically OK but pushing it a little bit, especially with loading and unloading the boat.

I don't think I'll be able to go to NA's in August, for various reasons, mostly to do with COVID and family stuff.

You shouldn't worry about violence.  I live in Oakland, in the middle of where a lot of the protests and riots were.  It has all quieted down.  Even in the middle of it all, it never felt unsafe, as long as you don't deliberately go out looking for trouble.  Don't park your boat downtown in front of the dispensary or liquor store. None of that is anywhere close to Huntington.

The violence is over and was very contained to four city La  SF Seattle and Portland
Zero problem in the rest of state infant things are very quiet

The bigger problem is CV 19

I have a flu waiting on the test   It’s a bitch whipped my arse

Coming out of this morning the first time in a week

People from the cities flood to tahoe and the case load spiked

In my county case load has been flat then June first then  wham

I have been wearing my mask when ever out but still  got a flu ( air born? )

However if you think about going To Huntington which is a great idea !!

social distancing and really good mask for shopping etc do not stop a Shaver Lake

Huntington has so few visitors which is a good thing

Check if the camp site are open some are and some aren’t

There’s plenty on water in the Nor Cal lakes easy to check HL

Others thoughts ?

Hi there, I briefly considered sailing my boat across the International border under cover of darkness...but then it occurred to me that with no proper dolly on the US side, I might scratch up the pristine bottom of CAN048. For that reason, I think I will wait for 2021, which promises to be a better year from many perspectives.
Please stay safe all, and keep your health and your boat in top form, as we shall surely meet again😁

My sense of the COVID thing is that with 9+ million cases worldwide and, last I heard, only 2 cases traced to outdoor transmission (only 1 confirmed), I conclude the following:

- outdoor transmission is harder to trace than indoor transmission
- even so, it is safer to be outdoors visiting with someone who has COVID than to go shopping at a store and risk random exposure
- given that we are sailing single handed boats, the regatta is not the risk/exposure.
- getting to the event (as Mark noted) is the "risky" part
- we need to make our individual decisions as to what risk is acceptable, and accordingly, each individual needs to make a decision as to whether or not they will attend
- deciding to attend or not applies to both the primary regatta date and location (Huntington in August), and the back up date/location (Jordanelle, Utah, Sept). Obviously each person could have 3 different decision types i.e yes to one and no to the other, or yes to both or no to both.
- I'm happy to wait for the final decision until Aug 1, but if any of you need it to be sooner than that, we'll try to push the final decision a bit sooner.

My decision is yes to either/both options

Please think it over and get back to me.

Dear Philip -

With very much respect and friendship, I do have to advise that your comparator of the risk of attending a regatta or any shared sporting activity outdoors with going shopping indoors is not helpful and should be re-phrased or even withdrawn, please.

On this issue of weighing and assessing risk in the decisions that are made here :  where you have got this idea of “... only 2 cases traced to outdoor transmission (only 1 confirmed) ...” I have no idea.  The COVID-19 virus’s propensity for transmission, both through proximity of people and through physical contact and touch of surfaces, hands, etc. is no more limited or mitigated by being external than when it is indoors. This is VERY important to note as people make these decisions.

You are also a little adrift in your summary of the worldwide extent of the cases caused by the virus : they stand at not 9 but just short of 13 millions right now, and are likely to be in the range of 15, 16 or 17 millions by the time of the Regatta.

I promise you I write solely in respect and out of concern for everyone’s sake - not to score any points.

Sail safe, guys and girls ...

Yours -

Per the suggestion of Richard Healed, here is a rewritten version of my post on 7/11. I made a few mistakes.

First, I forgot that the audience on google groups is larger than the small group of us that know each other well, and I tend to communicate with close friends and acquaintances in a sort of “short hand” which assumes a trust and multidimensional understanding of each other that cannot be assumed when communicating with or to a stranger. Also, it needs to be clear that I am not a scientist, much less an epidemiologist. I am just another person navigating this new health minefield, and doing my best to maintain mental health in this process. For me this means going outdoors. Without saying it I also assumed that any suggestion for activity includes social distancing. I should not assume. Remember – this is just one person’s opinion.

Regarding the first item in the bullet list, my sense is that the outdoor transmission rate is not understood, but it is probably much higher than it looks (implied in the comment “harder to trace”). Nevertheless, it is obviously much lower than indoor transmission, so I prioritize outdoor activity; this is my personal choice and I do not think it is necessary for others to make this choice.

The second bullet point is needless. Basically nonsense as Richard noted. I should not post when I am tired!

The third point needs clarification. This year’s venue, as Paul noted, is an excellent option for the regatta in COVID times for several reasons. The Huntington location itself is sparsely attended, our regatta is very small (rarely more than 10 people), and all the activities are done outside (there is no yacht club), which makes it very easy to practice social distance. If we do the regatta this year, the biggest change will be no handshakes or hugs.

The fourth bullet point may actually be OK!

I stand by the fifth point. The decision must be individual. I would add that there should be no pressure on anyone to do more than they think is right.

The last two points are purely administrative. We need to know where people stand so we can plan or cancel appropriately.

I am not so worried about the actual event on the water. It is with
the possible exposure on the way to and from, possible changes in
quarantine restrictions that are very fluid and change at a moment's
notice. There is the possibility that some or many of us could end up
stuck somewhere for several weeks.

Also, the county we are headed to is a hotbed. I know we'll be remote
in the mountains but we will still have to pass through, purchase gas,
and maybe other supplies.

Also, if we only have three or four boats, it isn't worth the trip for me.

A selfish and personal point for me is I'm purchasing a new house with
a very small farm at the same time so staying home will make things
easier.
