Hi All

We have a very successful multi box scheme up in Scarborough on a modern wooden planking clad steel framed sports hall.

Initially installed in 2021 and first occupied in 2022 we now have 10 model 30 boxes out of 16 in use.

There is physically space for more boxes as they are currently only taking up about 20% of the eaves and are evenly spaced.

What is the consensus on having more than 16 boxes in a single colony? Would that be too many?

I would appreciate the groups thoughts.

Regards

Hi,
Looking for some advice please. I was discussing to a tradesman how a
property had the mortar filled in under the end tiles but left holes where
the swifts nest. The swifts returned this year so a positive outcome. He
said that that is against the law and the worker could get in trouble as
they have purposely left holes in the house so could also effect insurance
claims and the house is not properly insulated. This is the first I have
heard of this. I said I would find out and get back to him as this is
something I hadn't come across before. This is something I've been asking
residents in my area to do, to protect swift nests.
Thank you,
Chele

Hi Michelle

The builder may correct in part.

"If a traditional mortar verge is being used, the verge should normally be fully and properly bedded. Leaving some end tiles mortared and others not could be poor workmanship unless the roof system is specifically designed that way.
If this is a new roof or a re-roofing project requiring Building Regulations compliance, an incomplete or poorly secured verge could potentially fail to meet the required standards if the tiles are not adequately fixed against wind uplift."

But the homeowners will have a say should they wish but the considerations re buildings insurance could make them nervous. Sorry to hear this is a potential stumbling block.

I imagine Dick Newell and Edward Mayer will have a view on this?

Best Wishes,
Louise

Swifts (SOS) <swi...@suffolkbirdgroup.org>: Jul 01 05:40PM +0100

Is it the bottom of the tile above the gutter you’re referring to, Swifts can access when concrete pointing has fallen out and no combing installed.

Re-pointing can easily be omitted during roof works if requested by the owner and won’t affect any insurances.

If the roof below was being tidied the roofers would want to install anti-bird combing as below. It can be omitted at the owner’s request but the felt manufacturer would probably not entertain a warranty claim in the rare event of an issue. In these circumstances I suggest a sacrificial top layer for additional protection from Swifts’ claws.

The roof below was tidied with combing installed, the owner didn’t know of the Swift nest. So with the owners permission we snipped it.

Pointing up the hips (corners) or at gable ends of a roof can’t be omitted, tiles would come loose over time and be a hazard

Askrigg Swifts held its swift evening last night.
We had heard a few rumours from swifties that a few people were coming so
added the main hall to our booking of the back room. Just as well as 78
people turned up. They had tea and swift biscuits (cutter made by husband
but he only made 30 biscuits which we thought would be plenty). I gave a 45
minute presentation and after a break where people looked at boxes, bricks
a caller and took booklets, and importantly wrote they names on a contact
list, 55 stayed for Justin's film. They loved it.
Meanwhile it was raining but cleared enough for 24 people to come on the
walk and some bangers put on a terrific display.
One of the National Park Wildlife officers was there. He was really nice.
However it seems, upon gentle interrogation, there is no joined up thinking
between Planning and Wildlife so swifts are not as I suspected considered
by the Park at all when permission for renovations is sought.
So a great evening, I feel inspired, basically need to quit my job and
expand our group to the whole of Wensleydale! It can be done.
I am doing another swift walk Thursday 19.30.
I'll leave you with these quotes from Mr Hodgson's family farm diaries
which I used in the presentation: ‘The arrival of summer visitors is
eagerly anticipated in other cultures and it is good to know that in
Mongolia farmers welcome swallows as we do, recorded in a daily diary over
the best part of 100 years’ and also, when I asked him one day which was
his favourite ‘Well, swallows are my favourite birds… but I know they are
not as extreme as swifts…’

amanda- what a successful event you did, with such great interest.

We are in the YDNP and have a system where I send all swift nest places to the planners. They are put into the 'constraints' layer and if any application is submitted for those places, we are notified. That means I can submit comments etc. It worked very well on one occasion when the top floor of a mill was being demolished and we got a Condition for installation of 36 integral swift bricks.

Maybe message me privately to follow this up, I wonder which officer came to your event.

best wishes

Subject: [SLN] Swift Awareness Week Dartmouth Swift Walk

About 15 people attended the swift walk and talk organised by BeWild and the Devon Swift Project. We started near the house which had been renovated on Mayors Avenue and saw swifts entering the eaves of the house at the opposite end confirming the white streaks on the brick work are an active nest. The renovated house had 6 bricks installed not in the best location at the eaves as hoped but we then observed a cock sparrow entering one followed by a female! Walking around to st saviours church we observed gull chicks with reports of them succumbing to the heat last week while also seeing some external insulation cladding and hearing of where other swifts are often seen and how thy could be marked on swift mapper. At the church the caller could be heard and an explanation of why the Devon Swift Project installs in churches and why they can be so good for swift conservation. Sadly no swift fly byes. On returning to the start of the walk at Mayors avenue about 12 swifts were seen circling the original building and providing a highlight to the evening and emphasising the importance of the building for Dartmouth swifts.
A good evening with people travelling about 10 miles to attend.
All the best
