Hi Dick/All,

What's the difference between the above?

We need to continue making Model 30 boxes & have been offered PVC - UE when up until now we've been using UPVC?

Hi Ian,
The E stands for expanded, so the core is less dense. I'm not aware of any problem with that but it might be an idea to see it before you buy any, hopefully they'll send you a sample.

The U in both cases stands for unplasticised, which is better as it's recyclable.

If anyone's interested in the finer points of PVC... Standard plasticised PVC is more flexible and used for flooring, pipe insulation etc.

The use of uPVC as soffitboards is not good for swifts or house martins. Fibre cement is probably better for that, e.g. https://www.kemwell-fire.com/kemwell-undercloak-soffit-strips/

However for nestbox roofs, although it's a synthetic product, uPVC improves its environmental performance by being recyclable, doesn't need painting and, unlike single-use plastics, it's serving a purpose for decades.

For example, the industry standard BRE Green Guide to Specification rates uPVC-framed windows as A (Good) overall for environmental impact.

Mike

Is there any comparison between the performance difference of  plastic insulation and a double skin of wood/wood product on boxes as I wonder how much plastic is actually recycled at the end of its working life (which for boxes is quite long)?
See some designs already use wood rather than plastic….
Perhaps plastic is a pollutant which we are choosing to ignore as we find it so convenient and can’t face changing away from it?

Perhaps the SLN could suggest experiments for the network to try out to keep development of boxes progressing?

Regards
