Hi,
We used this idea of making swifts from paper plates with young children using the curve of the plates for the wings.
Good luck,

Morning

I have the opportunity to hold an afternoon session for children at a local
library. I've picked up the recent helpful email trail on children's swift
books.

I'm looking for ideas for a swift craft session during the afternoon. Can
anyone help with either where to get - swift 'colouring in' templates or
other simple craft ideas we can use.

Many thanks for your help.

Very best wishes

Sally

Hi Sally,

Here is the RSPB template, which has two versions, one of which you can
colour yourself. We also made a simpler template for younger children when
I ran an event at our library last year. I'll attach that, too, plus some
outlines.

Cherry Hubbard from the Cirencester Swift Group made a scream of clay
swifts for her class, but I'm not sure if her project can be shared without
her permission. Perhaps you can contact her via this SLN group.

Have fun,

Amanda

I think the risk of Swifts falling out of bottom-facing holes is
overstated. However, adult birds exiting will swoop lower so are more
vulnerable to cats. There is a 3rd option with the entrance facing
obliquely down as in the Zeist and Model 30 boxes. Such entrances are
aligned with the direction that Swifts naturally enter and exit, so may be
preferable.
As with so many things, the science has not been done to answer this
question
