In the 1800 and 1900's ladies used to wear not only feather hats but ones with whole birds stuck on the top, including a Swift. They of course we're horrific and whilst the Pankhurst sisters were fighting for women's rights and also wore these
grotesque hats; Emma Williamson and Etta Lemon and other women were fighting just as hard for the birds, and their efforts eventually stopped this trade with legislation. Etta's group went onto be the forerunner of the RSPB!
