Hi everyone,

Very new to Swift conservation here. I have a passion and desire to play a part in helping these incredible birds.

Any helpful hints and tips when you first started to raise awareness and drive Swift conservation efforts in your local area and how you managed to set up a local group for your area will be greatly appreciated.

Doing a local swift walk during Swift Awareness Week and advertising it and taking people's emails when they attend is a great start and got me in touch with two people locally who have had swifts in their roofs for years and always loved them. We now have a WhatsApp group where we all chat about how our swifts are doing. It's so nice to no longer feel like the only swift lover in the village!

Hi Lauren,
We're a village group near Cambridge, about 18 months old. I advertised in our village magazine and in the online newsletter for interested people and got about 12 replies. Facebook neighbourhood group, too, if you've got one. That allowed us to start a group. We applied to our parish council for a grant to put some boxes up, and found a tree surgeon who would put the boxes up for £20 per box. If you haven't got a parish council, maybe your local council? Councillors seem to be generally receptive. If you're really lucky you might find a local person who's prepared to go up ladders for free and put boxes up, but we didn't, which is why we had to pay someone. I have been surprised how many local people responded, seems people are really interested in swifts. Sign up to the Facebook groups - SOSSSH, All Things Swift, Swifts SOS and just dip in to them (there are constant posts), but you can learn an awful lot from them. It takes a while to get your head round it all! And of course endless resources from Action for Swifts and Swift Conservation's websites.  I could probably tell you lots more. Happy to answer any questions if you want to know more. Just email me.
Good luck!

Good morning Lauren.
Our small group are also in Cambridgeshire and almost immediately after setting up we too approached our local Parish Council. They were so accommodating and funded us sufficiently to purchase around 30 of John Stimpsons Model 30 boxes, around half of which were gifted to willing residents on our street where our colony resides. The remainder are scattered around our village. We were also gifted further funding which allowed us the privilege of a visit from Edward Mayer in 2 weeks time to educate us on how best to look after our summer migrants!
I wish you every success moving forward

Regards
Neil Whitaker
