Swifts (SOS) <swi...@suffolkbirdgroup.org>: May 14 06:32PM +0100
Evening all Below are a couple of graphics showing the increase in both the number of locations hosting Swifts and the number of nest boxes used by Swifts around the county over the last 10 years or so. We have built upon the lesson learnt from the initial successes in the west of the county. There’s is a big jump in box numbers used between 2023 and 2024, some of this is possibly due to increased vigilance and Herts’ Graham Knights method of nest monitoring using calls. Early thought for this season is that though there are still many Swifts to return to monitored nest boxes we have received multiple reports already of more nest boxes being used for the first time in 2025. We are hoping for some easy wins after many of the 130 nest boxes kindly donated to SOSSwifts by BUNZL in 2024 have been donated for fitting at locations where Swifts are breeding already. I still feel that we have no idea on the number of existing nesting sites being lost due to renovation works. Loft insulation, re-roofing and anti-leaf gutter brushes have been recent culprits noted. Many thanks for all the gems from here and see you in Lancaster hopefully. Great work Eddie. Using BTO estimates of average swift population density there would be about 500 pairs of Swifts in the whole of Suffolk, which would mean you have half of them in nest boxes! Of course, the BTO estimate is wildly wrong by a large factor, but even so you have a very worthwhile proportion. Dick On Wed, 14 May 2025, 18:33 Swifts (SOS), <swi...@suffolkbirdgroup.org> wrote: |

Looking at all the countries they fly over and finding out about them, their peoples, cultures and their wildlife (briefly!) Watching tiny flying insects with magnifying glasses and realising that's what Swifts eat and ID'ing them. Looking for Swifts over the school yard. Going to a nearby reservoir or gravel pit or a big flat bit of the Thames and watching Swifts feed and drink at teatime. Drawing Swifts, Matins & Swallows, making Swift models from wool and toilet roll middles and string and glue and paint and papier mache! Wonderfully messy! What do you think? Laurinda PS I was out cycling at lunchtime in Bedford and saw a swift entering a property along a road where there's a known colony. Just lucky! I'll log that one on Swiftmapper. Thanks Laurinda, I'm not sure if it's appropriate, could you tell me? There are 9 known natural nests hereabouts, and an unknown number of unknown ones, all in the streets nearby, and we don't know how far the area stretches. I'm sure it's a colony or a group of colonies as far as the Swifts are concerned, but then isn't everywhere? And we have Swiftmapper for that? If the criteria is monitoring, we don't formally monitor other than a swift walk every year, and recording on swiftmapper. I think we get the same bunch of screamers going between them all. We have a WhatsApp group so we can tell each other how many we spot when and where, but of course it's still difficult to tell! It's really interesting when we see a much larger group of swifts, higher above, all circling and screaming to each other. This tends to happen when the second wave arrives, but I also saw it on a smaller scale yesterday, so I don't know what that was about. I presumed it was groups of nearby groups all communicating with each other, but maybe it was just swifts passing overhead for another reason. Although when that happens it looks more like a steady stream all going in the same direction. Here in Kent we are also just starting to work in primary schools and therefore thinking about appropriate learning activities given the pressures on the curriculum. I have a background as a primary teacher, head and local government school adviser although I am bit out of touch now ........but old habits re advising on lesson planning die hard. I think it would really help teachers to fit Swift related work into their busy schedules if we can relate it to the National Curriculum for them. There will be links into language work, maths and art work depending on the activities but the key subject will be Science at each key stage. At Key Stages one and two, children are required to know about life cycles, animals and their habitats. A study of Swifts could very address these attainment targets. Suggested learning outcomes for a short project could be: (1) For the pupils to understand the life cycle of the Common Swift (2) For pupils to understand the ways that the life cycle of the Common Swift has evolved to suit its aerial habitat (3) for pupils to understand what the Common Swift needs to survive and the dangers it faces. For Key Stage 2 pupils there is also some support in a Swift project for the Geography program of study in which pupils are expected to be able to use maps and globes. Just a few thoughts....... Scaffolding has been erected in front of nest sites of HMs and possibly swifts too. As usual scaffolders didn’t see any birds although others did. Reported to 101 but I contacted the local wildlife crime officer directly who always tells me ‘The only issue here is that is not illegal to disturb, only destroy, a birds nest unless they are a Schedule 1 protected species. Unfortunately, swifts and house martins do not fall into this category. But happy to attend to check species.’ What is the point of red listing if they aren’t schedule 1 - which is a weird list anyway? Anyone else been told that active nest sites aren’t protected from disturbance? We all have this every year and my understanding is that active sites of any birds cannot be disturbed (or destroyed) Peta |

If the scaffolding won't be removed by negotiation or police intervention I would get video evidence of the birds attempting to get to the nests and failing, and post this on social media naming the site Tag your local councillors and MP in the post and ask that it is shared widely online. I would ensure that any of the scaffolders are offered friendly advise that they are *personally* liable and they cannot hide under working for a company Once an Incident number is registered then it is really out of their control and if destruction of a nest is proved then they will be in the “firing line”. Sowing a bit of uncertainty and doubt often helps If there is any prosecution they are the individuals to be fined - it often hits home the possible risks they run On Wed, 14 May 2025 at 13:07, 'Peta' via swiftslocalnetwork < |

I think the definition of destruction is open to interpretation. If the birds can’t get to their nest and it has young or eggs in it then you could argue it has been destroyed: the birds’ attempt to breed has been destroyed. Even if the physical nest is still there. The site has been visited and a bird seen getting into a nest. So case is closed. Hmm |

We are carrying out some RSPB research this summer, testing methods for detecting occupancy of artificial swift nest sites (nest boxes and swift bricks) including thermal cameras. This work will inform the survey design for a citizen science national survey of swift occupancy of artificial nest sites which we hope to roll out in 2026, funding permitting. That survey will then improve our understanding of the factors influencing swift occupancy of artificial nest sites which will allow us to better advocate for them being provided in optimal locations for swifts in the future. For this season, it is proving difficult to find suitable study sites with swift bricks which are already being used by breeding swifts. If anyone has access to or knows of good sites where swifts are nesting in swift bricks (we require sites with 10s of nests rather just single nests in bricks) - please get in touch with me as we would potentially be interested in carrying out thermal camera surveys there this June/July. I am based in Lincolnshire so sites in the counties surrounding Lincs would be optimal, but this is not essential, so do please get in touch beyond that area if there is a site with a large number of swifts breeding in bricks.
