Hi Aaron.

There is no way to make something "more powerful" on a page unfortunately (although I like the sound of that idea :)

You might want to run your page through a profiler to see what is the actual culprit for the slow down on mouse mouse. It seems odd that a simple title change or adSense would affect performance so badly.

Google Chrome has a excellent profiler built into the developer tools.

here is a quick overview:

I'd also continue to experiment with what combinations work / don't work just by commenting out code. Does it slow down in all browsers?

Perhaps you want to post a link to your page in case anyone on the list is curious / can offer further advice. Note - This is not really a swfobject issue per se, as once the flash file is displayed on the screen, swfobeject has done it;s job and is not actually executing any code anymore. The performance issues seem to be a battle between the js files and the Flash file itself. You might get more replies on a js specific forum / list...

Hi guys,

I seem to be having a problem with swfobject 2.2.

I have some javascript that updates the document.title every second.

I have a swf embedded on the page using swfobject 2.2 using the dynamic publishing method.

I have 3 (javascript) google adsense ads, and a “ADD THIS” bookmarking button (also javascript)

If I have all the above running on the page – everything works fine – until I move the mouse. Then the swf will pause until the mouse stops moving. Then it will run again. If I keep moving my mouse – the swf will just stay stopped. The javascript updating the document.title continues to work fine.

If I remove the adsense/bookmark javascript – the swf will run fine – the document.title javascript also runs fine. Even when the mouse is moved – all is good.

I think this means – for some reason – swfobject is being slowed down my the javascript used by google adsense, and the bookmarking. As the setInterval updating the page title works fine when they are removed – and swfobject can play the swf file.

Is there any way to make swfobject more “powerful” then the other js on the page? So my swf always runs smooth. Or can anyone give me any advice on how to solve the problem.

What I would really like is for the flash to run smooth when the ads/bookmark are on – and the page title is continually updated.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks Aran!

I've never heard of using a profiler before!

But after following your advice it seems that "expansion_embed.js" from the google adsense ads are running all the time on my page.

To think that i blamed swfobject!!! After the years of great swf support it's given me! Tut tut ut.

I'm not sure how i can solve the problem - know that i know it's being caused by a script i cannot edit. But i have found out the problem happens only in Internet Explorer. So maybe i will just have to try and make my code more efficient?

Thanks again for the help!

I'll take this to a javascript forum now :-)

Glad you were able to pinpoint the issue (and that it wasn't swfobject :)

With your Adsense, I thought you could sign up for different ad types. Maybe you don't want expansion type ads which will mess with your mouse movements.

Anyhow, there seems top be a bunch of stuff out on the web re: Adsense and performance etc.

Good luck with the hunt.
