Be sure to alert us if the name on your application is different from the name on your score report. You do not need to notify us about minor differences in spacing or hyphenation (such as "Juan Carlos" vs. "JuanCarlos" or "Jane Henry Doe" vs. "Jane Henry-Doe").

Ask Educational Testing Service to report scores to the Duke University Graduate School. Use institution code 5156. ETS will require you to select a department code. It does not matter which department code you choose. The Graduate School will receive the scores as long as you choose institution code 5156.

The IELTS Academic test is administered by Cambridge ESOL, British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia. See www.ielts.org for more information. The Duke University Graduate School is registered to receive electronic IELTS scores using the IELTS Results Service E-Delivery. Please send scores via e-delivery by selecting the "Duke University Graduate School" option.

If you do not see an option for electronic scores when using "Duke University Graduate School " as the Institution on the request form, try using "Duke University" as the Institution and "Graduate School" for the Department. The process for selecting e-delivery recipients may be slightly different depending on the organization administering the IELTS test. Please refer to the IELTS website for information regarding testing policies.

All admitted international students whose first language is not English are required to take placement exams conducted by the English for International Students program at the beginning of the term of matriculation, even if the TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo English Test requirement is waived (see below). Depending on the exam results, students are either exempted from or placed into EIS courses.

To be eligible for a TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo English Test waiver, you must have studied fulltime for two years or more at a college or university where the sole language of instruction is English and in a country where English is the primary spoken language. The two years of study must be completed prior to the start of the program.

If you believe you qualify for a TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo English Test waiver based on the above criteria, indicate your eligibility in the Additional Academic Information section of the application under the Test Score Instructions for the TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo English Test exam. Due to the volume of applications we receive, we will not examine, confirm the status of, or grant any waiver requests prior to extending an offer of admission.

A. Cancellations
You can cancel your IELTS test registration at any time before taking your test by notifying the test centre. Refund policy is dependent upon when you cancel and whether exceptional circumstances apply.

B. Transfers
You may change your test date at any time before the test. However, your transfer request may be treated as a cancellation dependent on how near to the test day it is made.

You must select a new test date, where available, within three months of your original test date. If your preferred test date is more than three months after your original test date, your transfer will be treated as a cancellation.

On rare occasions, there may be instances where you are unable to attend your test or are disadvantaged on the test day owing to illness, injury, or other exceptional event outside your control. In these cases, you may make an application to your test centre for special consideration due to exceptional circumstances. This will allow you to carry over your test fee to a later test date or, in some cases, apply for a refund.

You can apply for special consideration before the test, and up to two calendar days after the test date. However, applications for special consideration will not be accepted after your results have been released.

If you did not receive the score you expected, you can apply for your test to be re-marked. This is called an Enquiry on Results (EOR). You can choose which test sections you want to be re-marked.
The fee for this service is NZ$250, which will be refunded if your score is increased for any section of the test.

You need to apply for re-marking no later than six weeks after the test date, regardless of whether you have taken IELTS on paper or IELTS on computer. You can submit an Enquiry on Results online from the Test Taker Portal . Alternatively, you can download the Enquiry on Results form and email to ielts...@manukau.ac.nz or contact the IELTS centre. Make sure you attach your proof of payment.

I hope to move to Australia to study biomedicine, and I need IELTS for university entry requirements. I had heard about British Council IELTS testing when I was in China, and I booked this test because it is the one I was most familiar with.

I am originally from India, but I have been in New Zealand for four years now. I moved to New Zealand to study and for career opportunities. When I arrived, I started my studies at MIT, and completed a degree in electrical engineering, specialising in electronics.

I chose British Council IELTS with MIT because I knew about their reputation from when I was a student here. The location was convenient, and it was good to book a Saturday to fit in with my work schedule.

The test went well, it was easy, staff were friendly, the location was convenient for me, and I felt well prepared. In preparation for my test, I used the free British Council IELTS app which was very helpful, and there are two free tests available which was good preparation for me also.

I needed an IELTS test to apply for study in early childhood education. I chose IELTS on computer as have been upskilling on computers since 2022, when I came to New Zealand. I also thought doing IELTS on computer would be easier compared to the paper exams I had done at school back in Fiji.

MIT is near where I live so the test centre was easy to find. My family members had sat their tests here and they recommended I do the same. The online booking was accessible and easy. On test day, the staff were friendly, helpful, and willing to assist me if I was unsure of anything.
