AestheticsI am tempted to also say cosmetics. We're currently in a feedback loop where the most popular heroes are the ones that get more cosmetics, which in turn makes them more popular. Believe it or not, Crystal Maiden was still a fairly popular support pick before her arcana. Sometimes we choose based on how the hero looks more than how it feels, which explains her spike in popularity before people realized a swimming dog didn't change that your movement speed is slower than dirt. It made me think: what would happen if we took the skill set of a popular hero and put it in another hero's body? Like a Dota Freaky Friday or Trading Places. Switch Queen of Pain and IO for a day. IO is now a mid lane staple with poor late game scaling, and most importantly: no cosmetics. QoP has a global teleport and a tether dynamic that requires a close buddy. Wouldn't you want to sidle up to that hero now?

Take a look at your heroes page. What are some of the heroes you never played and was it a deliberate choice? By the way, congratulations if you've played all the heroes. I don't think I'll ever bring myself to picking Earth Spirit, unless I random him twice in a row.

So many hero's that I have no intention to ever play, so not surprised to see them there. Been meaning to play Dork Seer, Phoenix, Tree Prophet and maybe Bristleback. Cute Storm Spirit stats btw dude :3

I've never played phoenix, techies and winter wyvern. WW i will play eventually and i have from my smurfs, techies i don't think i will ever want to play from my main and phoenix is in a weird place for me, i love him and hate him at the same time. Love him that he can do much, hate him that he could do so much more and felt so much better to me in Dota 1 before he got a ton of reworks

I only played around 2000ish match on Dota 2 and I have Batrider and Nyx as my 2 most played heroes, every other heroes were spread quite evenly and there are heroes that I only played few times. I think it also has to do on what kind of "role" people are playing, so some people might never even touch support/cores heroes

i know for sure i'll never play all heroes because i refuse to play skywrtah mage, riki and pa.those heroes make me wanna cry sometimes espeacially beacuse you'r team doesn't know how to control them.i'll just stick to mid and ganking heroes

I don't know, I like to try a hero and play him a couple of times to get better at them. I don't like trying a hero for one match (unless Single Draft forces me). When I play a hero I like to find out what the best items/builds are in what situations. I can certainly say I have a couple of heroes I know very well to play in different situations.

i've tried all heroes, even played 32 games of Earth Spirit, he seems fun at start, but with overpower comes hard control. Now im maxing my Storm Spirit and Shadow Fiend and try to play less as fat guy :D

There are heroes who are popular in pub-matches and heroes who are popular in Tournaments, but to my mind there is currently no hero who is as unpopular in BOTH as Elder-Titan, and it's a damn shame.

He looks so cool, but his abilities are just so "meh", IMO.

i've played 4k games and ofc played all heroes, but like 20 of them were played only few times.

and i have in top heroes unpopular ones. that is one of the reasons i play them, cause it looks cool when u play good on hero which is hard to master.

puck, brewmaster (i played him before popularity raise), earth spirit, morphling, tusk(!), techies... i love them so much and don't understand why they are underpicked.

Welllllllllllll..... Visage is my most played hero, since he actually kicks ass in lower mmr assuming you don't get countered (unlikely) and know how to use your birds. I don't play him that often now though, mostly because there are few lineups that he fits in. And he's not very popular in the E-Sports scene either, or at least not as popular as he used to be.

That said, I'm really surprised to see that there are so many heroes that i haven't even touched yet. Most of them are just heroes that I don't like or don't fit into the current meta. Exceptions would be micro-heavy heroes (Meepo, Beast, etc), as well as techies, for some very, very, very, strange reason ......

Only hero I haven't played is Winter Wyvern because it's new, sadly I can play every hero but none to the point where I can reliably win in pubs lol. The whole 'jack of all trades, master of none' fits me pretty well.

yeah haha i remember in my early days of playing dota 2 in june 2013 (never played dota 1) i used to main visage without levelling ult and enchantress without levelling enchant but i wouldnt be caught dead playing them now

I decided that I will limit myself to playing flying heroes with big wings for now. I noticed it the last time when I played Windranger that I am having difficulties finding my hero in a clash when it doesn't have big wings.

But it was no use. The real story about the artist-formally-known-as-MOBA community is in this game I had been avoiding. Logging into Heroes of Newerth for the first time is like going naked into a knife fight.

It's a shame: S2 built this super-nice, really economical war machine, and then had an international shower of bastards descend on it. They went to all the bother of making new, slightly quirkier DOTA heroes and making a whole host of new items and menu systems, and they made a nice little shop to monetize, just to have people come on and shout abuse at each other, hate on each other, and kick people until they never load up the game again and go and cry in the bath and tell themselves they are fat and unloveable and will never get a boyfriend because her skills are just not good enough in HoN. Pass the wine. I must have the wine! My life from now on will be a failure!

But to be serious: in the history of the world, I have never heard a developer say that they want to make a gamer disconnect from the game as part of the experience, perhaps unless it was a horror game, but I think possibly 90% of the people who start this game actually disconnect fairly quickly and go and watch Morecambe and Wise for an hour to grow back their sense of humanity. I lie back and think of Scotland whilst people are lobbing around insults, but there are getting to be more and more people who are migrating to an online space that is heavily community moderated: both League of Legends and DOTA 2 are that space, though the problem persists there too.

Newell said to the Seven Day Cooldown podcasters: We're trying to figure out ways so that people who are more valuable to everybody else [are] recognized and accommodated. We all know people where if they're playing we want to play, and there are other people where if they're playing we would [rather] be on the other side of the planet. It's just a question of coming up with mechanisms that recognize and reward people who are doing things that are valuable to other groups of people."

Newell's got it right: if you want to expand your player base, you make them feel comfortable, rewarded, and like you belong. You can still keep the competitive edge: after all, professional football has a strict card system, and if you're rude to other players you are restricted access to the game. It's still one of the most competitive and popular sports to be in.

Can you imagine a world in which online multiplayer were always a comfortable, safe, rewarding experience to have? One where you rarely if ever encountered a troll? One where the people on your team were welcoming, whom you liked and formed real camaraderie with? Where you didn't have to be drunk to laugh at your own difficulties? Where you knew everyone's nickname and personality by memory, because you loved playing with them? You would spend all your time and money there. Friends would join to be with friends. We wouldn't need bots. It would be a wonderland. It would be that virtual world that our parents always worried we'd be sucked into forever. I would throw my salary at it like the cash were white hot in my hands. Newell just knows that is where we all want to go: to the promised land.

Heroes of Newerth would be, without its community, a cheap well-oiled version of DOTA, but the inability of the game mechanics to manage its community, or to offer a way to practise with bots to avoid that community, makes it impenetrable. It's out of its depth, and the playing fields of Newerth have become the nihilistic wastelands of Mad Max without any of the cool bikes. And yet, the environment isn't out with our control. The universal truth is this: you can be great at LPGs without being a cunt. It's in the DOTA wiki.

Battlegrounds, or maps, are where the Heroes do battle and matches are fought. Each battleground has a different layout as well as unique features. Completing these special objectives can give your team massive advantages, though these advantages and...

Tanks should always be with or near their 4 man, although there are a few exceptions based on comps. The solo lane can be played by just about any hero, not just bruisers, and again it will depend on maps and comps.

The solo lane is typically top lane on 2 lane maps, or the one further from the other 2 in 3 lane maps. For example, on Tomb of the Spider Queen, the bottom lane is the traditional solo lane, while the 4 man rotates between top and mid. For the larger 3 lane maps, like Cursed Hollow, you can actually draft 2 solo laners and play a 1-1-3 style. Alternatively, you can pick global heroes like Dehaka or Falstad to cover lanes and still fly in for the objective.

There are a few alternate strategies that do not follow these norms. For example, on Towers of Doom you could draft a hero who is fast at wave clear, such as Xul, and have him double soak top and mid while the 4 man pressures bottom lane very hard.

Healers in hots are a much more dedicated role than in those games. There are a few heroes/champs that have strong heals but few of them can compare to the likes of Medic, Anduin or Whitemane.

Actual supports like Medivh, Zarya, TLV and Aba are a much better comparison. Just kits loaded with utility.
