---------- My Post ------------
We're thinking about doing a gathering in or near the Des Moines area,
probably in October. We've started talking about it with some other
locals & there seems to be some interest so far & we have some helpers
for organizing already. I have a few ideas for what to do, but some of
them require us to make it a little bit bigger of a gathering (think
larger than Judie's gathering but smaller than SGGA). So...this is
just kind of a preliminary check to see who might be interested in
coming. If we end up keeping it smaller, that's totally fine & I would
be happy to open up my house to just hang out, but I think it would be
cool to do something a little larger since I know a lot of people in
this area won't be able to attend SGGA this year. Please reply to this
topic with the following:
1. Do you think you'd be able to attend? If so, approx how many people
might be in your group? How far would you be traveling?
2. Would you be interested in making a whole weekend out of it
(starting Friday night, ending Saturday night)?
3. Are you interested in having any glider education sessions during
the gathering?
4. Would you be interested in hearing, learning about, & seeing other
exotic animals too?
5. Are you interested in helping out with the planning or volunteering
in any way? In what capacity (doing a demonstration, helping with
planning, etc)?
6. Would you like to vend at this event? (This is not locking you into
or out of anything, I just want a general idea of how many vendors we
might have.)
7. Do you have any specific ideas you would like to have happen during
this event? We obviously can't do everything, but we'll take all ideas
into consideration.
Just to mention a few ideas that I had... We have a LOT of people
purchasing from the mill breeders that come to the Iowa State Fair in
August. I was thinking it would be great to advertise at local vets
and even have someone pass out fliers at the fair, to try & get people
to attend our event who are less educated about glider care. If we
were to do that, I'm thinking we'd have a session on Friday night
about beginner glider care. Those who are more experienced & don't
want/need to attend that would be able to socialize with their GC
buddies, etc during that time & those who do want to attend could
maybe help with the session. The session could be followed by door
prizes & vending. I would imagine that if we do this, some may come
just for the beginner class, stock up on a few things they just
learned about, & then may not spend the whole weekend with us.
Two of our baby hedgehogs were purchased by the local zoo here to be
used in their educational program. They take animals out to day cares,
nursing homes, etc to teach people about them. I was thinking another
fun idea might be to have them bring some exotic animals out to show
us or possibly even to go there for kind of a behind-the-scenes tour.
I know a lot of people who are into suggies are into other exotics
too, so I thought something like this could be fun. I don't really
know at this point what they might charge for something like this.
Also, we breed hedgehogs & just got a ball python. I know a lot of
other people like to bring their other exotics to these gatherings. I
thought it would be fun to have some designated time for people to
show off their other exotic friends too.
All of this is in VERY preliminary stages of planning. We haven't
gotten much further than "should we have an event?" So we're open to
any ideas that you have. If we are in fact having a gathering, I will
make a website where you can register & get more details.
Thanks,
Misty
