New Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) Position Statement Available
The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) has released its 2007 position statement on the "Principles and Guidelines for Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Programs." The position statement and its executive summary are posted on ASHA's Web site at http://www.asha.org/members/aud/default .
Building on the previous report published in 2000, the goal of early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) is to maximize linguistic and communicative competence and literacy development for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Without appropriate opportunities to learn language, these children will fall behind their hearing peers in language, cognition, and social-emotional development. Such delays may result in lower educational and employment levels in adulthood.
The new 2007 statement includes updated definitions for targeted hearing loss, hearing screening and rescreening protocols for the neonatal intensive care unit and well baby nurseries, diagnostic audiologic evaluation, early intervention, surveillance, and communication and information infrastructure.
The JCIH, of which ASHA is a founding member, has a 30+ history of providing leadership in gathering evidence to ensure preferred practices in early identification of infants with hearing loss. This new position statement has been developed to provide guidance both nationally and internationally to audiologists, speech-language pathologists, policy makers, administrators of hospitals and alternate birthing centers, federal agencies, and state departments of health and education about optimal early hearing detection and intervention program development and management.
Come and hear about the 2007 JCIH position statement from the committee members!
