Hey everyone,

Looks like this whole thing died in 2020.

Stéphane published a spectacular Apple II game book titled Secrets of the Apple II Gaming World. You should check it out!

It’s on Amazon.

In other news, I haven’t picked up any “new” Apple II ziplock games. Hugh Falk and I have been trading emails about it, though.

Wow,  I almost forgot about this group, it’s been so long.

I still actively collect too, but I’m down to just a couple items in my want list, and I’m also low on trade-bait.

Sorry, no Apple II games in ziplocks that I can send your way, but I’ll have to grab that book for sure!

I've actually got a bunch of Apple ziplocs (and other things) up for grabs. Send me a list of what you're looking for or have a look at www.mocagh.org,  pretty much everything is for sale.

Hello guys,

nice to hear from you :). It's been a while indeed.

Congratulations on the book, Stephane!

Also after a long while I've been blogging about adventures/RPGs and retro games again. F.ex. Sierra's AGI & SCI0 adventures and SSI's 1980s fantasy games and AD&D gold boxes, more to come. It's faster to write in my native language so it's originally in Finnish but you can get an idea with Google translate if you'd like to check it out:

Congrats Stephane!  That’s a big deal! I just bought it on Amazon.

And thanks John for digging up this group. Guess it took someone with Hyperthymesia to remember 😀

I had recently taken pictures of all my baggie games, which I realized I had never done… and those are games I’ve never sold off over my several moves to save space. I was listening to John’s great podcasts about Sirius, Synergistic, etc so I sent him this link to the pics. Good to hear from you all, and congrats Stephane on the book!

I have stopped collecting videogames completely myself. I have less than 30 big boxes on my shelves right now, and half of them are just I guess less usual ones that I have listed on eBay

Still happy to talk shop of course, I miss those golden days of game collecting. I was reminiscing recently on the funny trades we used to do in GameTZ back in the day. :)

Put me on the "wow, this thing is still working?" list

I've stopped collecting old systems/games, though I refuse to sell off my small collection and still love to talk about nostalgia games.  I will definitely have to grab the book since my focus was on collecting Apple II hardware/software.

These days, most of my time is spent restoring a 1978 Rockola Jukebox and Streaming TTRPGs with my Wife multiple times a week.(mainly World of Darkness stuff).

I've largely concluded all game collecting. Was happy to image at least the media for everything I had and upload it to the world. But really I was forever hanging onto a hazy vision "someday" with no plan or goal to get there. Once I realized that it was just unfocused nostalgia with no practical next step, I rehomed most of my classic games and focused on the 1995-2010 era which I still play fairly regularly. Just beat "Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay" on the OG XBox (well, Xemu). I really wanted games to play not just look at. Every time I tried to engage with a classic, those paper manuals that were once a source of joy became a source of friction. Emulating the games on the era above with modern emulation conveniences (save anywhere, cheat codes, Internet walkthroughs) is the right balance of rough-around-the-edges and enjoyment. (I have no idea who the hell could actually get the secret ending on Drakengard without help, or who beat Xenogears without at least something of a push). Beat them both on emulators. Those are the games I still play and still hold up for me.

What are you missing? I'm about to list an Ultima Trilogy and Ultima III this weekend. I have two copies of Ultima III. And don't need the trilogy with having the original 1,2,3. Yeah the blue Sierra box doesn't fit the mold but trying to be practical.

Rise from your grave! I think Paul Beraglia who sent me the Planetfall 2 prototype invited me to this group back in... 2007. I see many friendly faces are still here.

The timing is nice as I actually began collecting games again, or rather completing collections. Strictly adventures, nothing overly rare. I'm getting close to having at least one copy of each Sierra entry and finally devoted attention to the languishing LucasArts shelf -- only 4 games left. There's finally some belated Tex Murphy presence too! I'm going to focus on Legend next as time (err, and finances) permits.

Really nice to see renewed activity in here!

I visited Access Software in Salt Lake City in 1994 just after Under A Killing Moon was released. I got to meet Bruce Carver, Apple II legend.

Links 386 Pro was a huge game at the time!

I don’t know if Access gets all they love they deserve.

Games like Raid Over Moscow and the Beach Head games are some of my all time favorites.  10th Frame and the original Leaderboard sucked HOURS of my time too.

Does anyone have a copy of Raid before it was renamed Raid Over Moscow?

I don't think they get enough credit either. Killing Moon and Pandora are exceptional masterpieces both in the technical and scriptwriting departments. Perhaps the FMV fatigue was growing high at the time with too many poor titles stressing the market.

And yes, Links was *massive* at the time -- speaking with Aaron Conners a few years ago, he confirmed the franchise overshadowed any other Access title. I had no idea there were so many fans of golf out there.

BTW they're doing a remake of UAKM and thankfully the Kickstarter is doing great: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/texmurphy/tex-murphy-killing-moon-rising

Glad to see everyone is still "there", lots of familiar names.

And equally amazing that the group is technically still working. My memory is fuzzy, but I remember giving this group up in favor of a big box collector Facebook group maybe, which I just visited a couple of times.

On the topic of collecting, I seem to have decided a while back that I was happy with my collection as it is (rather, not spending $1000s on older Sierra / Online Systems titles ;) ). Always taking peaks at what is out there, but the prices for anything interesting seem just crazy. Maybe rather go back to selling, I must have a 1000 surplus boxes sitting around :)  (curse of a big basement, I guess).

"Completing" my Lucas* collection always seemed easier that for Sierra, not just for sheer number of releases but also release varieties. Good luck to you, Agustín! Just wondering what "each entry" would mean.

Thanks, Dirk!

I didn't phrase that properly -- what I meant to say is that I want to have at least one edition of each Sierra adventure. I only collect different editions in rare circumstances, a few Sierra games being one of them. For instance, it would be nice to have the first KQ1 PCJr or the SQ1 flipbox. But I'm happy with the current status, it took literal decades getting to this point :D

Not sure if the group handles attachments, here's a link to a picture: https://share.icloud.com/photos/074upKRy32OxzKRdYihwv_ejw

The Lucas games I'm missing are MI1 and 2, Maniac, and Zak, which I understand is extremely difficult to find these days.

So sorry to hear about that horrible story of your basement :(

A couple of years ago we moved to a new place which had a huge problem of humidity. We spent 6+ months without an actual floor as we waited for the moist to settle (eventually we had to apply a special treatment). I had all my collectibles in boxes, including books, and of course a number of those boxes caught a good deal of humidity (and stench). There were some valuable casualties.

Anyway, I also have the Suspended mask which sadly doesn't fit in those shelves. That's my all-time favorite box.

I’m still enjoying collecting, although collecting software is past its prime as far as availability and prices.

It's so fun to see these names in my inbox again!

I was never as heavy into software collecting as the rest of you. It was a tangent to my video game collecting, although fueled by my Apple //e experience as a kid.

If I saw something neat from that era for cheap, I'd pick it up to help save it for the future. Possibly I'd see something worth a bit and pick it up to theoretically make some money. But all that stuff is still sitting in my garage. (We eventually had too many kids to keep it in the house.) So apparently I *am* a collector. (I don't think it's quite enough stuff to make me a software hoarder, especially compared to the cartridges and consoles.)

Despite me ranking myself low on the totem pole, Trixter eventually made me a list admin. But thanks to whoever else is also an admin and approving these new posts faster than I get to them!

Hi Lee!

I think we are all game collectors — but since this group is named Software Collectors list, it’s more computer oriented than console. ;)

I do have some software from the 80s that isn’t games, but it’s not much. Some of it is connected to games like Nasir’s EZ-DRAW, or Synergistic’s Higher Text. Utilities, many of which are Beagle Bros.

I’m not sure how many on this list collect games from the 70s, but I have several cassettes from MUSE, Apple, SOFTAPE, and others. The earliest computer games. In fact, I have a full retail MUSE collection box that was displayed next to the register at retail.

Best,
John

Hhhmmm. Only computing things I have from the 70s are a TRS-80, which needs maintenance, an Atari 800, which needs a facelift, and a rare Argentinian console made to celebrate World Cup '78. I'm not too crazy about games from that period. The first Zork folio edition would be nice to have, but I believe that strictly speaking it's from 1980.

Software, I don't collect much -- currently just a couple of copies of MS-DOS. I'd love to have one version of Turbo Pascal, but that's it.

Does a 1978 Rockola Sybaris Jukebox count as a "computing" thing?  If so, the one in my collection is finally almost completely restored with new caps, resistors, and molex connectors in place.  Only thing left is to replace the Caps/Resistors in the LED "now playing" panel and to pull one of the motors so I can troubleshoot an annoying rattle noise it makes.

I’m into PET and Apple II cassettes, and TRS-80 cassettes occasionally. At one point I bought Antoine Vigneau’s Apple II cassette collection, which doubled the number of tapes in my A2 collection. It’s unusual to see an A2 cassette with a copyright later than 1981. Aside from all those multi-platform Avalon Hill releases. The older the better is the way I see software and game collecting.

And I have a set collector’s mentality, so I have a good deal of non-game software from Apple, Microlab, Personal Software and Synergistic, for example. I have an unhealthy enjoyment of Microlab fuzzy binders.

I love the older 70s stuff as well, when I can find it, especially for more
obscure computer systems that were not known for commercial computer games
like the North Star, the Heathkit and other CP/M machines. I've even got an
8" floppy game or two by Supersoft which is impressive to just see.

Some of the cooler Apple II 70s titles come from Instant Software,
Synergistic, Adventure International, Automated Simulations, Avalon Hill,
and of course Beneath Apple Manor.

For me it has always been about the packaging and feelies, and preserving as
many obscure physical variants as I can. Unfortunately I have started
selling off some of my items both for the space and a need for funds, plus
I'm finally realizing that I'm happy just with my photos and scans of most
of the items, especially those I don't have a deep physical connection with.

Howard

P.S. congrats on the book Stephane!
