It occurs to me that all software collection is virtual now anyway. I have somehow managed to amass a collection of 250 titles on Steam in the past 9 years:

Who has me beat? Any other platforms/virtual stores where you have acquired large numbers of virtual titles, perhaps against your better judgment? (I also purchased 3 virtual games for my PS3 which I no longer have, so those games are gone for good.)

Mike,

Close, but not quite the top collection.  My steam library has 378 titles (up to level 119) as of now with at least another 100 I could claim in Humble Bundles that I haven't because I would never play them.

Oh man, Humble Bundle. I actually don't get too many game bundles from there, but I have a ridiculous backlog of comic books, graphic novels, and technical books because of them!

Steam has perfected the model of people buying stuff they’ll likely never use if the price is good enough. For so many years I would pick up a game and mentally fast forward to how much I’d enjoy it and how I thought it would work. Actual use has shown that my mental model and actual operation were more often significantly different. I’ve also ‘cleaned out’ my steam collection by loading every single title and ‘hiding’ all the ones I didn’t care for. At any point in time all the visible games are equally valid choices. I have also used the return policy at least twice now. No more of this “buy today and load up sometime 6 months later”. Steam has a habit of frequent sales so it’s rare that I buy something at full sticker now. Just wait a few weeks and it usually produces a sale of 10-25%.

I am definitely guilty of buying games and never playing them.  I think I have played about 100 of my nearly 400 games.

Ever since starting to stream TTRPGs with my wife, I have found I average maybe having time to play 1 game a week even though I tell myself I am going to relax every other night and play games (which never seems to happen).

From a collector stance though what about them losing rights and removing from your account?  I've had a few games that they pretend to have but won't sell anymore and know a small percentag of people that have bought something on steam or iTunes only to have it removed from their collection later since the seller didn't pay royalties. Doesn't feel like I own anything in my ewaste pile. Given its quite convenient.

I also found they butchered a few games into buggy messes (someone did, probably not steams fault) but unplayable with friends vs played and beat it coop with friends when we owned physical copies.

268. Plus over 1000 more if you count the recent fundraiser on itch.io.

I still have 700+ physical collectibles (more if you count applications),
although I am trying to downsize since I'm out of room.

In the past I’ve had a few BluRay disks with Ultraviolet get transferred to another service when Ultraviolet shut down. It’s possible something like that can happen. I’ve seen content on the PlayStation Store cite that such and such won’t be available for purchase but anyone who already owns it will continue to have access. Generally I haven’t had content disappear, but I have had to go through hoops if I really wanted to keep it. In any event, no refunds.

Also I have played a few games that didn’t work correctly when offered by GOG. Commandos was one in particular. Never went back to see if it was fixed. I tend to stick with dosbox and original media if I really want to play something.

592 Steam games here. I've started realizing in the last year or so that unless the game is very specific, I'm just not going to play it, so all the times I buy a $5 game on a 75% sale because it "looks cool" ends up being a waste.

On the other hand focusing on those specific games I really like pay off: I got around 300h worth of Pathfinder Kingmaker for the $30 I paid

And the above is my view on big box collecting as well (hence my previous remark of "collecting" vs "hoarding" on another thread).

I have 1754 digital PC games (and more in digital software) across various digital distribution platforms (1,297 total on Steam) at the moment and at least half that much digitally on the three modern consoles. While I still maintain a reasonably large physical game collection these days (though more targeted than in the past), I truly am all-in on digital, and do so for media too, streaming and otherwise. I don't however, consider the two sides equivalent in any way. Digital is fast and convenient, but it certainly doesn't give the same feelings as physical goods. At the same time, I really don't have the same interest I used to in storing and maintaining physical goods, which is why I try to be much more targeted in what I acquire/keep.

In terms of digital going away one day, considering how inexpensive a lot of it is and the vast volume of stuff out there, I don't really consider it an issue. I still have more games (and growing) than any one person can reasonably play fully in a single lifetime.
