Volunteers power the San Diego Audubon Society

Every year, SDAS volunteers log thousands of hours restoring habitats for birds and other wildlife, removing trash, representing our organization at events such as EarthFair, assisting in our office, and helping maintain our two wildlife sanctuaries, Silverwood and Anstine.

Saturday: Spring Cleaning at the Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary

Saturday, May 21, 9am - noon
The 752-acre Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for volunteers to help in the construction of trails, trail clearing, invasive weed control and maintaining fire clearance zones. Volunteer work party events are held every third Saturday of each month from 9am to 12pm. Silverwood is owned and operated by the San Diego Audubon Society and is run strictly by donations. The San Diego Audubon Society invites you to help maintain the trails and inhibit invasive plants at Silverwood by clearing trails, and spreading wood chips in invasive plant zones. We are also reconstructing trails damaged in the 2003 Cedar Fire. Silverwood is home to the endangered coastal chaparral ecosystem as well as hundreds of plant and animal species. These volunteer events will be a great opportunity to experience a piece of San Diego’s backcountry while helping to ensure that Silverwood is maintained for people and wildlife. If you have them, bring your binoculars – we’ll likely see many birds while we work.
Volunteers should be in good physical health, as this event does involve some strenuous activity. Volunteers should work in old clothes, long pants, wear boots or sturdy shoes, and bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats. We will provide work gloves, tools, snacks and water.
If you’d like to volunteer this weekend, please RSVP to Phillip Lambert philscot...@yahoo.com, or call 619-443-2998.
Directions: Silverwood is located at 13003 Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside. From San Diego, take I-8 east to Hwy 67N to Lakeside. In Lakeside, turn right on Mapleview and then left on Ashwood. Ashwood becomes Wildcat Canyon Road. Silverwood is 4.8 miles from the Ashwood turn; the entrance is on the right-hand side, marked by a large yellow mailbox. From the North County area, take Hwy 52 east to Hwy 67. Take Hwy 67 north to Lakeside, and follow directions above. Lost? Call Phil Lambert, the resident manager, at 619-443-2998, or 858-273-7800.
By acting locally, we are helping globally. This volunteer event will be a great opportunity to experience a piece of San Diego’s backcountry while helping to ensure that Silverwood is maintained for people and wildlife.
