Hello,

I'm using "SWAT-MODFLOW Tutorial 2019" published by Professor Bailey, and I have a question which I will really appreciate if anyone can help me.

I did all the steps as the tutorial, but it gives me empty outputs when I run the SWAT-MODFLOW3.exe.
I checked the "swatmf_log", and it seems like the code stops before reading Modflow. To be more precise, "swatmf_link.txt: output control has been read" is the last in the log file.
Can anybody give me a hint about what could be wrong?

In the tutorial, it is mentioned to make sure that all files are in the same folder before running the SWAT-MODFLOW3.exe, but I'm not sure how.
For example, my SWAT model has many different folders, each containing different files. Should I move every single file to 1 specific folder before running the SWAT-MODFLOW3.exe?

Thank you so much for your time.

With best regards
Rezvane

Hi Rezvane,

Yes, you need to put input files from "Txtinout (SWAT)", MODFLOW inputs (*.dis, *.bas, etc), and four linkage files together in the same folder then try to run it again.

Best,
Seonggyu

Hello Rezvane & Seonggyu,

I experienced a similar error, but mine stopped at "swatmf_link.txt: output flags have been read". My txtinout files, modflow-nwt input files exported from modelmuse, and the four link files are all in the same folder with the SWAT-MODFLOW3.exe. Any suggestions on how to debug this?

I noticed from the set of files exported from modelmuse that there was no *.hed and *.ccf which are required files as stated in the tutorial. Instead, there were *.fhd and *.cbc (binary) files. Is this the possible cause of the error?

I look forward to any response. Thank you!

Melvin

Hi Melvin,

They are just different formats of output files which are not the cause of the issue. Please share your QSWATMOD project (qgis file and project folder). I will take a look.

Thanks,
Seonggyu

Hello Dr. Seonggyu,

Thank you for your response. I tried using QSWATMOD and the manual method (DHRU created with arcmap, etc.) and had different errors. I'm sending both projects for your reference. I greatly appreciate the help.
Respectfully,
Melvin

Hi Melvin,

I checked both of your models (QSWATMOD and manual linked) and found a couple of issues. First, you need to change a steady state (SS) to transient (TR) in your MODFLOW model using *.dis file and provide a longer simulation period than one from SWAT. Second, you need to provide a specific yield (SY) value in *.upw file after you convert SS to TR.
You might have another issue even after you change those settings. So, once you modify the MODFLOW model, please share the updated MODFLOW model again.

Thanks,
Seonggyu

I am using SWAT-Modflow Tutorial V3, and I did all the steps of this tutorial.
I put the following files in the same folder:
- the TXTinout (SWAT)
- the Modflow input files (exported by the Modelmuse)
-the four linkage files
-the SWATmf-link file
however, when I run the SWAT-MODFLOW3, the code stops at some point. the last linees in the log file are:

swatmf-init: swatmf-river2grid.txt has been read
swatmf-init: initialization finalized

it would be highly appreciated if you could help me

Dear Dr. Park,

Apologies for the late revert. Thank you for taking the time to review my work and for all of your suggestions. I've managed to muster the courage to work on this problem again.  I applied your recommendations with additional modifications:
- Simulation period for SWAT was changed to 1 year (2001) and MODFLOW is 2 years (2000-2001) for faster testing
- MODFLOW Model now has a heterogenous geology in each layer (varying K) and a WEL package
- In Identify River Cells, only MODFLOW river package was used
The log file now stops at "swatmf_link.txt:    output control has been read"  instead of  "swatmf_link.txt:    output flags have been read". Hope I could ask a bit of your precious time again to look into my updated model. Thank you very much.

Dear Dr. Seonggyu,

It seems that there has been an error in importing the MODFLOW grid to QSWATMOD since the mf_grid shape generated had so many null values. Will try to fix it and give you an update.

Dear Dr. Seonggyu,

I was able to fix the error and got my models linked up and running. Although I'm now encountering convergence errors, I've already tried making tweaks to the NWT file to see if it does any good. It did make the run go a little further but still failed eventually. I think it now boils down to the accuracy of the numerical setup of my modflow model. I would like to thank you for all the guidance you've given to this group. I appreciate how personal and patient you are with all our queries. I was only able to fix this error because you've already answered them in old posts by other members. I guess I just needed the perseverance of going through many of them one by one. I'll post updates and share my results as soon as I finish my thesis. Wish me luck :)

Hi Melvin,

Thank you for your kind words, and I'm pleased to hear that the issue has been resolved. I wish you all the best in your thesis defense. Please let me know if there are any other issues regarding SWAT-MODFLOW and QSWATMOD.

Best regards,
Seonggyu
