Dear Dr. Karim and SWAT CUP users

I am a new ArcSWAT and SWAT CUP user. I am not clear how the parameter's value is changed in calibration.

In first iteration I have used the following parameters values

Parameters                    Lower limit         Upper limit   Default/Arc Swat Value

v__CN2.mgt                       35.0                 98.0                  36
v__ALPHA_BF.gw               0.0                  1.0                  0.01
v__GW_DELAY.gw              0.0                   500.0               31
v__REVAPMN.gw               0.0                   500.0                 1
v__RCHRG_DP.gw              0.0                     1.0                0.05
v__GWQMN.gw                  0.0                    500.0               0
v__SFTMP.bsn                   -5.0                      5.0                1
v__SMTMP.bsn                   -5.0                     5.0               0.5
v__SMFMX.bsn                    0.0                    10.0             3.5
v__SMFMN.bsn                    0.0                    10.0             3.5
v__TIMP.bsn                         0.0                     1.0               1
v__ESCO.hru                        0.0                    1.0                0
v__CANMX.hru                      0.0                    10.0              0
v__CH_N2.rte                        -0.01                  0.3          0.05089
v__SOL_AWC().sol                 0.0                   1.0              0.1
v__SURLAG.bsn                    0.05                  24.0               4

But after one iteration I have got new parameter values (in Iter1 New_pars.txt) as bellow

Lower limit         Upper limit            Fitted value

v__CN2.mgt             43.478291          80.071709        61.775002
v__ALPHA_BF.gw    0.301387           0.908613           0.605
v__GW_DELAY.gw   53.139267         351.860748       202.5
v__REVAPMN.gw    -186.809219       271.809235        42.5
v__RCHRG_DP.gw   0.466374          1.403626            0.935
v__GWQMN.gw       -44.317440        319.317444       137.5
v__SFTMP.bsn         -1.035963          6.935963          2.95
v__SMTMP.bsn         -7.686213         0.786213          -3.45
v__SMFMX.bsn          2.813581         8.486419           5.65
v__SMFMN.bsn         1.514170         7.185830            4.35
v__TIMP.bsn              0.046391         0.6836090         0.365
v__ESCO.hru            0.031328         0.678672            0.355
v__CANMX.hru          3.363553         10.136447           6.75
v__CH_N2.rte            0.102012         0.327488            0.21475
v__SOL_AWC().sol   -0.403610         0.533610            0.065
v__SURLAG.bsn       -11.773576       12.113076           0.16975

Here I have seen some parameter's lower or upper limit like v__REVAPMN.gw,v__RCHRG_DP.gw, v__GWQMN.gw, v__SFTMP.bsn and so on exceed the initially fixed lower and upper limit (or Absolute  value)

Could anyone let me know what is the process to select the new interval for 2nd iteration? In  2nd iteration how can I fix the lower limit and upper limit of these parameter or take this generated lower limit and upper limit? I have seen in SWAT CUP manual:

New_Pars.txt - This file shows the suggested values of the new parameters to be used in
the next iteration. These values can be copied and pasted in the Par_inf.txt file for the next
iteration. The new parameters should be checked for possible unreasonable values (e.g.,
negative hydraulic conductivity,..
). These parameter values should be manually corrected.

Here only I have to change negative hydraulic conductivity to positive
hydraulic conductivity? And for other parameters negative lower or upper limit (for example v__REVAPMN.gw    -186.809219       271.809235, v__SOL_AWC().sol   -0.403610         0.533610, v__SURLAG.bsn       -11.773576       12.113076 ) are  acceptable for next iteration?

Eagerly waiting for cordial response.

Regards

Hossain

Dr. Karim (or anyone else),

Where is the reference directory? Is there a link? I am have having trouble figuring out how to set values for parameters that I want to use to calibrate. I originally chose them all to be relative but the program errors during calibration and then crashes. I am interested in a thorough explanation of what values will be accepted by SWATCUP depending on whether or not we choose "relative", "absolute", or "replace". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,
Jaison R.

... the reference directory is there in the program in par_inf, a list of parameters is also in the Absolute_SWAT_Values file.
All parameters could be treated with v__. r__, and a__, But spatial parameters (CN2, soil parameters, etc.) should use relative change r__, or spatial (natural) heterogeneity will be lost if set to v__. If you set all parameters to r__, then those that originally have a value of zero (in the Backup) will not change and remain zero.
Also, see the manual please and try to gain some understanding of the parameters.
Best, Karim

Dr. K,
Thank you very much for the reply. It was very helpful. I am a beginning user so my understanding of the parameters is not complete. I have read the manual but your reply helped clear up a few of my questions. Thank you!

Hello Jason Renkenberger

Did you find the list with the maximum and minimum values of the swat for calibration?
