Dear all,
I ran SWAT model for 11 years of data that I have from daily observations. From 1992 till 2002.
However, I decided thos ranges of years for warm up period, calibration and validation:

warming-up (2 years): 1992 – 1993

calibration period (6 years): 1994 - 1999

validation period (3 years): 2000-2002

My question is for calibrate and validated the model in SWAT-CUP, SUFI2. The TxtInOut simulated in SWAT should be for the 11 years, and then I just configure the observed files in SUFI2 for the 19994 -1999 for the calibration. Then after get the optimal parameters simulated the best range for the 3 years of validation: 2000 - 2002? That means, that I just run ArcSWAT one time and create just one project in SWAT-CUP.

The alternative process can be to run Arc-SWAT for the years that I want to calibrate, including the warm up period: 1992 - 1999. Create a project for this in SWAT-CUP.
Then after get the calibrated parameters, run Arc-SWAT for the validation period: 2000-2002. Create a project in SWAT-CUP for this period. And run with the optimal parameter value range.

My question which one is the correct process?
Thanks in advance for kind attention and answers.

Vicente

after calibration, make the observed files for the validation period. The use the final parameter ranges you obtained during calibration to run "one iteration" with as many simulations as you did for calibration. The 95ppu and the statistics in the summary statistics file are your validation results.
Best, Karim

Dear Dr. Abbaspour,

Thanks for your answer, I have corrected my shortcomings in the use of SUFI-2.

I am calibrating a model for an area where 60% is agriculture, the soil is mainly sandy, so the water table is shallow, and baseflow is the highest component of the stream flow, with a 85%.

The algorithm helped me to calibrate 10 parameters. I kept the parameter value limits according with what is expected for the zone. The parameters calibrated were:

CN2, ALPHA_BF, GW_DELAY, GWQMN, GW_REVAP, ESCO, CH_K2, SOL_AWC(..),SURLAG, and RCHRG_DP.

The statistics of the model performance were somehow adequate: about the goodness-of-fit R2=0.68, and Nash_Sutclif=0.67. Regarding, the uncertainty quantification p-factor was OK: 0.65, but the r-factor was 0.91. This is not god. In general, I have still to improve because the peaks are still underestimated. But the model is close to be ready. Tthe water balance was OK, as well.

The validation, was not bad p-factor=0.63, r-factor=0.95, R2=0.55, Nash_Sutclif=0.54. But still I’m wondering about the high r-factor.

Based in your well know experience, can you provide me some hints to improve the model.

Best regards,

Vicente

The factor is not high. Based on my experience r-factor around 1 is adequate.

Best, Karim
