Dear Users,
My study catchment is ungauged and it doesnot have flow at all. I have some in situ soil moisture measurement and want to validate satellite soil moisture and use it for calibration of SWAT. Is that possible to calibrate SWAT with surface soil moisture only? The remotely sensed data only gives me surface soil moisture. Therefore, I also want to estimate root zone moisture content as well. Please suggest me an open source software to estimate root zone soil moisture from satellite surface data.

Thanks,

Achamyeleh

I am facing the same issue. Did you find any solution?

you can calibrate for soil moisture in layer1 only. Use output.swr, as swat output file and make observation file as for discharge. Procedure is the same as discharge. SWAT outputs soil moisture for every soil layer in your database at every hru. That would be the root zone.

SWAT outputs soil moisture for every soil layer in output.swr file. You can use the soil moisture in the first soil layer to compare with satellite data.

Thank you Sir. I know about soil moisture data on HRU level.

Actually, I need the average soil moisture values simulated in SWAT for the topmost (2 cm - 5 cm) layer on subbasin level and not hru level. Is there a way to do that? Do I have to work with the source code to extract this data?

Regards,
Saumya

What SWAT gives is the average water in each soil layer. The soil layer is defined in your soil map. In the FAO soil, there is a topsoil of 30 cm followed by 70 cm subsoil. Here, swat can only give you average soil moisture of the top 30 cm and the bottom 70 cm. So it depends on your soil layers. At subbasin level, you just have to extract and average for all HRUs in a subbasin.

Thank you Prof. Karim. I am, infact, using FAO soil data. So I guess I can find out the average soil moisture at subbasin level by averaging out for all HRUs in the subbasins, but only for either top 30 cm or bottom 70 cm. Can you suggest some way to find out average soil moisture for the top (2 cm - 5 cm) simulated in SWAT as I have to calibrate the model with such satellite data?

Regards,
Saumya

Dear Prof. Karim,

In my output.swr file, I am getting soil moisture in 3 layers, whereas in my input, I have used FAO soil data which has only 2 layers. What can be the reason for this?

I am attaching an image of a part of output.swr database.

Dear prof Krim
Please, can you give an idea how to include output.swr in the swat-cup (like Rch, HRU and Sub) to calibrate the soil moisture for the first soil layer? Because it exists in the swat-cup project but it is not shown in the swat-cup interface.
thanks

You just need to edit the SUFI2_extract_swr.def like any other extract file and activate or add SUFI2_extract_swr.exe it in the SUFI2_extract.bat file. You also need to edit the observed_swr.txt file in SUFI2.IN. It is just the same as extracting discharge from output.rch.

Hi all,
I am trying to calibrate the swat model with root zone soil moisture of depth (0-100cm) with comapring SWmm (column number 9 in output.sub)
what i did that i only changed the depth of first layer as 1000mm as swat only simulate for the first layer...

but my problem is that mine simulation are not good (very low) ..

can anyone suggest what i did wrong or my approach is wrong ?

regards
suraj

Dear SWAT user,

Did you find a solution to this mismatch of layers? I am still trying to figure out what is happening.

Thank you in advance!

I have followed the steps suggested by Dr. Karim, above ("You just need to edit the SUFI2_extract_swr.def like any other extract file and activate or add SUFI2_extract_swr.exe it in the SUFI2_extract.bat file. You also need to edit the observed_swr.txt file in SUFI2.IN. It is just the same as extracting discharge from output.rch."). But can't find in swat cup interface. @2w2e, can you explain more about the activation of SUFI2_extract_swr.def.

Did anyone find the solution?

Dear Prof Karim and all,

In my outpot.swr, it is showing 3 layer but I have only selected 2. i.e 30cm and 70 cm, what could be the reason behind this?

Thanks and regards
Sujata
