Hey RAs!!
Hope you're having a great February so far! Here's your weekly dose of wonderful wellness wisdom:
Campus Happenings
Join Theta Chi! Looking for more ways to get involved on campus? Theta Chi needs new brothers who have the guts to think "outside the box" and aren't afraid to have fun while doing it. We're committed to excellence in everything we do, whether it's throwing awesome social events or helping out in our community. Throw away your "frat boy" stereotypes and talk to Mike McPhee (mam...@bucknell.edu) to see what you're missing out on.
Wellness Tip
Love your body! If you're not happy with what you see when you look in the mirror, get educated on how to change your physical self in a shiny sparkly *healthy* way. Research available resources, contact Health & Wellness Assistant Director Zabrina Andres, check out a fitness class with a friend, book an appointment with nutritionist Tanya Williams, or check in with a counselor in Psych Services.
Defining Wellness
Eating Disorder: Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, a form of self-starvation;bulimia nervosa, in which individuals engage in repetitive cycles of binge-eating alternating with self-induced vomiting or starvation; binge-eating disorder, which resembles bulimia but without compensatory behaviors (e.g. vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative abuse) to avoid weight gain; and atypical eating disorders, in which people may have fears and unusual behaviors (e.g. chewing and spitting or fear of choking) associated with eating. Although young women comprise the majority of people affected, eating disorders can occur in any age group. One in ten people with an eating disorder is male. (www.hopkinsmedicine.org)
Healthy Recipe
Chocolate Covered Strawberries Try this easy but classy recipe for you or your sweetheart this Valentine's Day! You will need: 2.5 oz chocolate chips, 1 tsp shortening, and 2.5 oz fresh strawberries. First, insert toothpicks into the tops of the strawberries for easy dipping. In a double boiler, melt the chocolate and shortening, stirring occasionally. Dip the strawberries into this mixture, then place on a piece of parchment paper to dry.
Dorm Room Workout
Healthy Human: Find a nice empty space of wall that you can safely hold a handstand against without hurting yourself or breaking anything. Placing your hands shoulder width apart on the floor close to the wall, kick up softly into a handstand. Engage your shoulders, core, and back while supporting your weight against the wall. Hold for 30 seconds, then kick down and hold a squat position for 30 seconds. Rest 30 seconds. Repeat 4 times for a total of 5 90-second rounds.
As always, have a healthy week!
