Scholarly Communication Doctoral Fellowship

The School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University Bloomington seeks to recruit an exceptional doctoral student with interest in issues related to scholarly communication for the IDEASc fellowship program, funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and hosted by the Department of Information and Library Science (ILS) and the University Libraries at Indiana University Bloomington (IUB). IDEASc – Integrated Doctoral Education with Application to Scholarly Communication – is a fellowship program designed to further scholarship and practice in the area of scholarly communication by integrating practical experience in the library with the research and classroom experiences that comprise the traditional education of doctoral students. The Fellow will be provided with intensive mentoring, wide-ranging opportunities to work and conduct research in scholarly communication, and comprehensive training in pedagogy, curricular development, and in-class instruction. Our efforts are motivated by an awareness of the complex transformations of library roles in the scholarly communication environment and the increasing need to educate future LIS faculty with an integrated understanding of research and practice to meet the needs of future MLS students.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of $23,000, health insurance, tuition, travel assistance, and funding for publication in an open access journal for three consecutive years as part of this program. The Fellow will also have an opportunity to work in the library with experienced and innovative librarians and with leading faculty studying the diverse range of issues related to scholarly communication. Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to, digital libraries, scientometrics, intellectual property, metadata, social media metrics, university presses, data curation, digital humanities, scholarly publishing, institutional repositories, and copyright. Additional information can be found on the project website:

http:info.ils.indiana.edu/IDEASc

Indiana University Bloomington is particularly well-situated to support this proposal given its campus-wide focus on issues of scholarly communication as well as the strengths of both the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries and the Department of Information and Library Science in this domain. This is a time of systemic change in how institutions create, sustain, and provide access to information, and libraries and LIS professionals are uniquely situated to influence the direction of this change. The project will graduate doctoral students who are not only familiar with issues of scholarly communication but will also, as leaders in the field, understand scholarly communication from the varying perspectives of practice, education, and research.

Applicants will need to apply to and meet the requirements for the ILS Ph.D. program. Information on the Ph.D. application process can be found on the departmental website (http://ils.indiana.edu/phd/). Students will additionally be asked to send their personal statement, writing sample, and CV/resume directly to Dr. Cassidy R. Sugimoto (sugimoto [at] indiana.edu). Applications should be received by February 1, 2016 for full consideration.

Microsoft Research New England PhD Intern

Hi all,
Please spread the word (and apply if this fits you!)

application guidelines at:
http://bit.ly/1ZBPa4o

blurb below (please follow the application guidelines closely)

APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 29, 2016

Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) is looking for advanced PhD students to join the Social Media Collective (SMC) for its 12-week 2016 Intern Program. The Social Media Collective scholars at MSRNE bring together empirical and critical perspectives to address complex socio-technical issues. Our research agenda draws on a social scientific/humanistic lens to understand the social meanings and possible futures of media and communication technologies. The ideal candidate may be trained in any number of disciplines (including anthropology, communication, information studies, media studies, sociology, science and technology studies, or a related field), but should have a strong social scientific or humanistic methodological, analytical, and theoretical foundation, be interested in questions related to media or communication technologies and society or culture, and be interested in working in a highly interdisciplinary environment that includes computer scientists, mathematicians, and economists.

MSRNE internships are 12-week paid internships in Cambridge, Massachusetts. PhD interns are expected to be on-site for the duration of their internship. Primary mentors for this year will be Nancy Baym, Tarleton Gillespie, and Mary L. Gray, with additional guidance offered by our lab postdocs and visiting scholars.

PhD interns at MSRNE are expected to devise and execute a research project (see project requirements below), based on their application project proposals, during their internships. The expected outcome of an internship at MSRNE is a draft of a publishable scholarly paper for an academic journal or conference of the intern’s choosing. Our goal is to help the intern advance their own career; interns are strongly encouraged to work towards a creative outcome that will help them on the academic job market. Interns are also expected to collaborate on projects or papers with full-time researchers and visitors, contribute to the SMC blog, give short presentations, attend the weekly lab colloquia, and contribute to the life of the community through weekly lunches with fellow PhD interns and the broader lab community. While this is not an applied program, MSRNE encourages interdisciplinary collaboration with computer scientists, economists, and mathematicians.

Postdoc: Network analyses of pollinator movements, University of Toulouse

Our lab seeks a postdoc in the field of spatial ecology to study bee foraging movements. In the lab, bees tend to establish routes minimizing travel distances between feeding sites, an optimisation problem analogous to the Travelling Salesman Problem. We are aiming at understanding how these spatial networks develop over the long-term in field realistic conditions where multiple individuals interact to collect heterogeneous resources. Network analyses and simulations models will be used to generate hypotheses to be tested in semi field setups (automated tracking, computer controlled feeders, etc.).

Job profile:

A 18 months IDEX funded position is available at the new Centre for Integrative Biology of Toulouse (http://cbi-toulouse.fr/eng/). Start date May - July 2016. Salary ? 33638 per year.

The lab is especially interested in developing network analyses to study pollinator movements. The postdoc will be encouraged to develop independent projects along this line with the possibility to generate his/her own behavioural datasets or making use of data collected in the lab or by collaborators. The postdoc will have  interactions with partners working on network analyses (Raphael Jeanson) and plant ecology (Christophe Andalo).

Required qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in bioinformatics, behaviour, ecology or related field. Publication of work based on dissertation. Working knowledge of bioinformatics pipelines and analyses on large datasets. Proficiency in scripting language (e.g. R, Matlab) and depth in some area of network analyses or spatial ecology. Prior experience in working with insects is preferred but not required.

Application:

To apply please submit a cover letter describing your relevant experience and interest, a CV, the contact information for two references, and 1-2 relevant publications to Mathieu Lihoreau (mathieu....@univ-tlse3.fr). Initial review of applications will begin on February 15, 2016. Applications will be reviewed every week until the search is closed.

Please feel free to contact us at the above email address with any questions.

Scientific context:
Recommender Systems aim at recommending some objects (jobs, TV programs, films, blog articles...) that are suitable to end-users. Recommendations are generally based on users' similarities and their past behaviors and are widely used in various domains.
In Recommender Systems, an important challenge relies on information gathering and integration. Indeed, the characteristics of the available data, particularly in large-scale environments, implies that user modelling and the recommendation decision have to be designed to be more adapted to this context.
The objective of this PhD is to study and to take into account in recommender systems the many dimensions of the avalaible data such as its dynamicity, its sparsity, its source or the amount of data to identify strategies aiming at allow a Recommender System to be suitable for a large-scale context. The main challenge is to keep a high level of recommendation quality although keeping a high answer speed.

Fully-funded PhD: Migrants’ heritage and its management in local cultural institutions (deadline 18 March 2016)

Fully-funded PhD: Migrants’ heritage and its management in local cultural institutions (deadline 18 March 2016)
https://www.findaphd.com/search/ProjectDetails.aspx?PJID=72964&LID=2712

This interdisciplinary project will explore how local cultural institutions (museums, libraries, and archives) can better prepare themselves to embed and manage migrants' cultural heritage in the digital age.
Migrating heritage is a feature of our globalised world, characterized by emerging challenges of social inclusion and new roles for cultural institutions (Innocenti, 2015). Communication and information technologies are changing the dynamics and scope of memory construction, display and understanding in a networked society (Castells, 2010). In this context a number of issues associated with cultural heritage information systems and services are yet to be adequately addressed, for example in relation to content organization and access, users outreach and sustainability (Ruthven and Chowdhury 2015). This opens the possibility for local cultural institutions to gain a greater understanding of migrants’ individual and community needs in relation to their services, address shortfalls in collections, and contribute to cultural citizenship (Delanty 2007).

Project objectives includes:
* Exploring novel methods and tools to embed, manage, access and re‐use migrant’s tangible and intangible heritage in local cultural institutions collections and services;
* Investigating information seeking behaviours, perceptions and attitudes of migrants and minority groups in relation to local cultural institutions;
* Enhancing current social inclusion practices in local cultural institutions.

The PGR student will work with local institutions so that impact measures can be developed.

The PGR student will join the vibrant research environment of the iSchool at University of Northumbria, Department of Mathematics and Information Sciences, (https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/mathematics-and-information-sciences/ ), part of the iSchools organization worldwide (http://ischools.org/) dedicated to advancing the information field. Northumbria iSchool explores innovative ways and contexts in which digital information is used, created, managed, preserved. The PGR student will also have access to the new cutting-edge iLab for Web and mobile usability studies, data analytics, and internet of things.

Funding Notes
The studentship includes a full stipend, paid for three years at RCUK rates (in 2016/17 this is £14,296 pa) and fees (Home/EU £4,350 / International £13,000).

Eligibility and How to Apply
Please note eligibility requirement:
• academic excellence i.e. 2:1 (or equivalent GPA from non-UK universities [preference for 1st class honours]); or a Masters with distinction.
• Appropriate IELTS score, if required.

Creating Knowledge, Enhancing Lives through Information & Technology

PhD in argumentation and decision making at Montpellier

PhD in argumentation and decision making at Montpellier

The position is within the INRIA GraphIK research group. GraphIK (Graphs for Inferences on Knowledge) is a joint team between INRIA (Sophia Antipolis Méditerranée center), the University of Montpellier, CNRS and INRA: https://team.inria.fr/graphik/. More information about Montpellier here: http://www.montpellier-france.com/

Project description:

The topic is within the general area of knowledge representation and reasoning with inconsistent knowledge and argumentation. The research focus of the thesis will be centered around the further exploration of argumentation semantics for decision making.
For example, as opposed to classical semantics in argumentation where an argument is killed by an attack, ranking semantics simply weaken the position of the argument. However many open questions still remain: how this impacts decision making when using argumentation? How to explain ranking semantics outputs to the user? etc.
The candidate will explore formal properties of such semantics and their suitability in real world applications involving decision making and reasoning under inconsistency with existential rules. An important theoretical knowledge representation background is required. Implementation skills are a plus. The argumentation ranking semantics developped in the thesis will be evaluated in a real world application in the framework of the H2020 European project NoAW (No Agro-Waste: Innovative approaches to turn agricultural waste into ecological and economic assets, 2016-2019).
The PhD student candidate has to proficient in written and oral English.
Contact:To apply, please send a complete CV together with the names and contact information of two referees by e-mail to croi...@lirmm.fr and Patric...@supagro.inra.fr.  Please write subject title: PhD Position NoAW application

Deadline of Application:  15th April 2016. Start date: October 2016. Duration: 3 years.
