I'm up at the family farm for the next week or so. That's good. It's
winter. That's bad. We just got fiberoptic internet service, which is
REALLY good and far faster than our old HughesNet satellite service. On
the other hand, it's still coming down a wire (or some reasonable
facsimile) just like our power and the old phone line, nailed from pole
to pole to pole.
Which means that, if a tree decides it just doesn't wanna play the game
any more and takes out the power lines, I'll probably lose internet
access too. So, I'll be freezing in the dark until I pull out my
generator, at which time I'll shift back to HughesNet which has the
expected satellite delays for everything but doesn't depend upon trees
staying upright. Data transfer rates may be fine once they start, but
response to anything takes up to second or more for anything, even
simple pings.
We'll see.

You'd think that the utilities would have wised up by now, and buried the power and communication lines instead of continuing to string them between poles. Yah, I know, it's more expensive on the capital outlay end of things, but has anybody actually done the cost/benefit analysis? Not that I know of.
