Dear friends,
A friend of mine is very actively involved with NGOs in Chennai that are working to rescue and rehabilitate flood victims in Kerala. She is also a passionate worker for animal welfare and informs me that there is a great shortage of supplies for rescue of animal flood victims. If the flood has derailed the lives of multitudes in large parts of Kerala, their animals have been even more severely affected. Many households fleeing the rising waters were not able to take their animals with them, and pets, cows, goats and poultry were left to the elements. Many pets were left locked in their cages or tied up, and could not even attempt to save themselves. Most were in dire straits without their human families to protect them.
Good Samaritans from all over South India have been very generous with donations of supplies for human victims, and I learn through hearsay that there appear to be sufficient resources at most centers at present, though ongoing demand will necessitate a steady stream of supplies for a few more weeks, at least. Unfortunately, there have been very few donations of food and other supplies for animal rescue and rehabilitation. My friend is coordinating among a volunteer network on the field, and the following list is of supplies immediately required by them for the non-human victims, as well as the essential supplies for human rescue.
Please do contribute what you can in cash or kind (preferably the latter) to my residence, C1-7-14 (2nd Loop, 13th Cross Road, Delhi Avenue), and your donations would be delivered to the drop-off point in Besant Nagar at the earliest. If we are not home, please do drop off the items in our front (sitting) room, left open, or at our servant's quarters down the lane. The relief work is expected to continue for weeks, so this is an ongoing effort. Please do forward this request to other campus mailing groups as well.
