Orissa, Kerala and Vasai!
Angry Christians protest Jesus caricature
Christians and others in Orissa have protested against a politician’s Christmas card that caricatured Jesus. The card from Manohar Randhari depicted an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus holding cigarette in one hand and a beer can in the other. Randhari is a member of the ruling Biju Janata Dal, a regional party in the Orissa state legislative assembly. Irate Christians blocked roads in various parts of Nawarangpur district on Christmas Day to protest the card. They lifted the ban after Randhari apologized saying some of his followers printed the card and the printer had played the mischief. Bishop Sarat Chandra Nayak of Berhampur said the controversy was “unfortunate” and the caricature showed “lack of sensitivity or ignorance” about Christmas. The prelate also said the legislator should be aware of the symbols of other religions lest he hurts their sentiments. Harish Aishalya, public relations officer of the opposition Congress party supported the protest against the “derogatory” picture. Father Upasi wants the legislator to spend time in a church to atone for his “irresponsibility.”
The incident in Orissa follows a similar one last week in Kerala where youth of a local parish protested after a weekly newspaper portrayed Jesus in a similar pose in Cherthala. Around 50 youth of Cherthala parish along with Catholic Living Community burned copies of the weekly Kerala Kaumudi and shouted slogans in front of its office before Christmas. The weekly published an interview of the archbishop of Trivandrum on his visit to the Holy Land along with photo of Jesus with a cigarette and glass of liquor in his hand. “The incident is uncalled for. Things would have been worse if the same incident had happened in other religions,” Father Sebastian Manickathan, the parish priest, told ucanews.com. The priest said, “it seems they have done it purposely but after seeing the protest, they are trying to justify it.” People expressed their anger through sporadic protests at different places. The editors of the publication asked for an apology.
The same picture of Jesus was published by Loksatta, the prominent Marathi daily of Maharasthra in its Christmas issue. The people e in Nirmal, Vasai burnt the copies of the daily in public on 26th December.
What’s happening? A racket cooked well? All our Catholic publications like Suwarta and The Examiner should be extra careful in publishing ads with Chritian pictures!
