Asof 2020, there are so many resources scattered around the web that bookmarks are essential to remember what tool you are in. So many that my bookmarks are arranged in many folders. I have even eliminated the name in each one of them with the intention of having more space and it is really comfortable to click on the pure icon of the requested web page knowing with precision where it will take you.
One last thing I would like to recommend you adding is that sometimes the icons are black and can disappear on the bookmark bar. It would be great to have a tool that can change the icon color into negative or positive depending on the case and even better in an automatized way.
I see a large number of custom icons for Dropbox folders with a google search, so I assume there must be some way to customize the icon, but I haven't figured out. I am running Mac OS 10.15. Any suggestions?

"This means that you may see that the ability to set custom folder icons has been removed"
Well put it back. I want that ability and I can find other cloud services that don't try to think for me.
The dropbox folder icons are just generic blue folder icons. Is there a way to use a picture within that folder as the icon display? I mostly use my dropbox to organize photos and it is not very friendly for customizing photo galleries. It would be nice to have a preview picture for folders so you know what is inside.
In the "Get Info" popup, when I try to paste the new png or jpeg image onto the old folder icon it only shows the DEFAULT file type icon for png and jpeg. The actual image does not appear. I've tried to repeat the process on folders that I have previously changed successfully only to have them now show the default icon.
Yes, that was exactly the problem. I am shocked that I had to copy it that EXACT manner. I have never copied anything that way before. In fact the instructions only mention this way as an option, not as the ONLY way that will work.
It may be this bug. Try changing the drive name. I did everything 'right' and it still would not let me change the icon. I changed the name of the drive and it unlocked whatever the impediment was. You can change the name back, no problem.
This solution is not working for me. I have a 200 GB card in my MacBook Pro. I changed the icon successfully at first, then decided to change my use for it & need a different icon. No matter how I copy/paste it only either goes to the original default or to the icon I'd put there early on. In fact, it'll actually show the old icon at top of the info window while showing the one I just TRIED to paste up at the bottom!
In fact, I'm noticing that the icon at top of the Get Info window is suddenly not showing up in ANY files except for folders & drives. This is a new issue perhaps with a recent software update? Happened before today's update, though. And not fixed with today's update.
I'm running Xfce 4.10 on Debian Jessie. I have my desktop set up pretty much the way I want it. One thing I cant figure out, is how to change the icon image for say a desktop directory or document from the default icon. I'm not talking about changing an icon set to make it look better, I want to right click the icon, select an image of my liking and use that as in Mate. I can do this with any icon in the Xfce panels, but not on the desktop.
Wouldn't it be fairly simple, and not break current behavior, if Thunar and the XFCE Desktop simply looked for a file in folders called .xfce-custom-folder-icon that contained the name of the icon you want displayed for that folder?
This would travel with portable devices like usb sticks or dvd-ram, etc. and would just be ignored by OS's / distros that didn't use it or know what to do with it. If the icon is missing, just use the default.
xfdesktop does support custom folders as of version 4.11.0. Simply put a jpg file in the same folder with the name either folder.jpg, cover.jpg, albumart.jpg, or fanart.jpg and it will become the folder icon on the desktop (commit).
I switched from Chrome, am really happy so far with the new Edge (first time I like a Microsoft browser). My favorites show the icons I have given them in Chrome, but how can I change the icon directly in Edge? E.g. I have collected weather apps in a folder and want to "rename" the folder with a cloud icon.
I would recommend you to suggest this feature by sending feedback through the in-built feedback(Alt+Shift+I) feature in Microsoft Edge as the correct Microsoft Edge team will get to know about your suggestion and your suggestion will get a +1
@TheShaunSaw Typical MS - product quality depends on the department developing - seems like they usually just send out new version, and then wait for the mob to email bug fixes. Not sure the suggestion of fixes works, unless it's something that is a huge security risk.
Still waiting since v 2015 of SSRS to allow you to type lower case for some colors and not give you an error, e.g., you can type "black" but not "white" - it must have an inital cap (or maybe vice-versa - I switch to hex).
Clearly they fixed this on some color names, but didn't meet the deadline.
I use my bookmarks toolbar as a quick access for a lot of my links - on the left, i have the websites i browse every day, and then i have a bunch of folders in which i have all the other websites, organized by category (news, social networks, etc.).
While it's possible to give whatever name to the folders (including emojis), I wondered if it was possible to replace the folder icon by a customizable emoji - this would allow to put the newspaper emoji for the news folder, for example. It would also allow to only have an emoji (and no text nor folder icon) in order to gain space on the bookmarks toolbar.
I'm joining a picture of my current setup (on top), and what a setup with emoji replacing the folder icons would look like.
Hi Firefox, I really enjoy your browser and I appreciate that you've brought RUST to the world.
Since I have so many bookmarks, I tend to use super short names or better yet, a single emoticon to mark it. Firefox shows the folder icon + the name or emoticon that I've labelled it as. I understand that this is to highlight that it is a folder but for me I already know it is a folder and the folder icon is just in the way. If I could turn this off, I would.
Currently, bookmarks automatically use the websites Favicon, and unfortunately, the Favicon doesn't always look good, and I have a full bar of bookmarks I would like to give some sort of aesthetic. I would like the ability to right click on a bookmark, and after selecting edit bookmark to be able to upload an image. I would really take the extra step to design, add rounded corners etc. just to make my bookmarks bar look good, but I kindly ask for that option.
I could be even simpler: having no folder image could do the trick. The bookmark button would be just the name/icon/emoji the user gave it (using a space for the name could be an easy way to make a hidden bookmark).
I was looking for the same thing. You do get used to using the favicons for bookmarks, but I find that you do that in conjunction with the site name or abbreviation you edit it down to. So for example when you then put your news feeds into a folder and label it "News", it's harder to differentiate and access quickly because all the folder outlines look the same. So perhaps I don't need to have a favicon for news, but just be able to put the folder name inside the folder outline and manipulate the color of the folder. That would really help.
We have a new feature request for you: the ability to change the favicon of a website or bookmark to an emoji of your choice. This would allow for great customization while using web apps and would help keep Firefox at par with other browsers like Arc that already offer this functionality.
In Dolphin, first off, you right-click the folder and go to Properties. Then go to General tab, and click the icon in the top left corner (A dialogue window will pop up). You can click system icons radio button, then select an icon category (Places in the image), and the bottom list will be reloaded with the system icons for specified category. Click other icons, and the bottom list will be reloaded with icons which are not part of your system icon theme. These icons can be, for example, icons of installed applications. Or click other icons, then click browse and find your custom image file to be used as icon for the folder. Now, click ok to finally apply the changes for real. Your folder will be now using the icon of your choice.
Try also to repair the installation, if you upgraded from 1.6.8 or 1.6.9. Just re-launch the TortoisSVN installer and choose "Repair". There are known problems with overlay icons and TortoiseSVN upgrades (see this blog post).
Make sure you have installed the x64 version of TortoiseSVN if you're using XP or Vista 64-bit. Since the explorer on those OS versions is a 64-bit application, it can not load the 32-bit version of TortoiseSVN.
Yes, is still persist after Refresh or File - Exit Directory Opus and reopen.
I don't think the same folders keeps getting small. Folders appears to be randomly affected and I couldn't relate to something.
It affects local drives as well.
