Hello SVMUG members and friends,

In case you haven't already seen it, the link below is to today’s press release on new Apple Intelligence and accessibility features. Most interesting are these items.

1. Enhancements Powered by Apple Intelligence
  • VoiceOver and Magnifier: Image Explorer in VoiceOver now uses Apple Intelligence to deliver more detailed descriptions of onscreen photos, scanned documents, and records. With Live Recognition, users can press the iPhone's Action button to ask questions about whatever is in their camera viewfinder, including asking follow-up questions in natural language. Magnifier gains similar visual-description and interactive question-and-answer capabilities, along with support for voice commands (e.g., saying "zoom in").
  • Voice Control: Navigating iPhone and iPad via Voice Control becomes more intuitive through natural language processing. Users no longer need to memorize exact labels or numbers; instead, they can use flexible input and "say what they see" to interact with apps (e.g., "tap the purple folder").
  • Accessibility Reader: This customized reading experience for users with low vision or dyslexia can now parse complex source materials like scientific articles containing multiple columns, images, and tables. It adds on-demand AI summaries and built-in translation while preserving custom formatting and fonts.
2. General Ecosystem & Device Updates
  • Generated Subtitles for Video: Apple is introducing system-wide, on-device speech recognition that automatically generates private subtitles for uncaptioned videos. This includes personal videos, clips sent by friends, or online streams across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro.
  • Wheelchair Control via Apple Vision Pro: Leveraging its precise eye-tracking capabilities, Apple Vision Pro will allow users to control compatible power wheelchairs (launching with Tolt and LUCI systems in the U.S.). This serves as an alternative drive control method for those who cannot use standard joysticks.
  • Vehicle Motion Cues for visionOS: Coming to Apple Vision Pro, this feature aims to reduce motion sickness for users operating the headset as a passenger in a moving vehicle.
3. Hardware Accessory Launch
  • Hikawa Grip & Stand for iPhone: Available immediately, this adaptive MagSafe accessory—designed by Bailey Hikawa in collaboration with PopSockets and individuals with physical disabilities affecting hand strength and mobility—is launching globally in three new colors on the online Apple Store.
