Also, one of my favorites is to use the 'Application Switcher':
One easy way to check for running applications is to press the Command (CMD) key, keep it held down, and also press the 'TAB' key, this will bring up the 'application switcher', which will show you all running apps, and also let you easily, while keeping the CMD held down, use your other finger to move away from the TAB key, to the "Q" key, to quit which ever app is currently highlight in the application switcher, so, you can thus easily just go 'down the row' by pressing the Q key over and over again to quit each app that is currently running.

It _may_ also possibly help somewhat if you : turn on "reduce transparency" in accessibility settings, in the system settings.

Also, see:
From Apple's support page:
Quickly switch between app windows
On your Mac, do any of the following:
Switch to the previous app: Press Command-Tab.
Scroll through all open apps: Press and hold the Command key, press the Tab key, then press the Left or Right arrow key until you get to the app you want. Release the Command key.
If you change your mind while scrolling through the apps and don’t want to switch apps, press Esc (Escape) or the Period key, then release the Command key.
